How did you get into wargaming?
I got into contact with a potential Shadowrun RPG group about two years ago now? One of them was trainee in our department and we started to talk about RPG. I was invited to host some rounds of Shadowrun as game master. Later we began to switch system and game master to alternate a bit. We started with Dark Heresy and I was drawn to the background, liking almost any RPG with enough sci-fi content. They were playing war games for quite some time and tended to keep talking about them now and then. Some day they convinced me to play a Tau vs. Imperial Army game which had me finally hooked then.
How did you get into Tau?
How I choose tau? Easy - by using logic and common sense to find the best suitable army for me:
=> Chaos deemons? Not after playing heroic fantasy RPG for more than half my life. Deemons are things to smite, not to play with
=> Chaos Space Marines? Nah, same as deemons but with less feet and more guns. Might not want to eat you but a big smoking hole in the chest ist not better, is it?
=> Eldar? ... they are some sort of space elves, right? With my beard I am more of a dwarven person. Just don't like elves and their always cliché-like glamour and elegance.
=> Dark Eldar? That would be Chaos (spawns of evil or better: experience points on legs/feet) and space elves combined... and Eldar helmets sort of look like metal jelly bag caps... no, sir!
=> Space Marines? Ney... for my taste they are to much the cool heroic ones who kill an invading horde of tyranids with a backhand flick of their chainsword and some tossed bolter bullets while discussing the properties of the new ork-blood-repelling power armor glossy finish from the Adeptus Mechanicus. I'd rather go with some underdogs.
=> Orks? Funny background, a bit satiric with added splatter? Check. Cool models with lots of bitz? Check. A small bit of added greenness (pun intended)? Check. But for a W40k new person? Too much models I guess and difficult to paint ones, too.
=> Imperial Army? Sound funny (and the Imperial Primer is a good laugh) but like orks they looked to model heavy to me in addition to the point that one of my friends is playing them.
=> Tyranids? Bionic power coming just to eat everything walking around? Why not, but again, to many models needed.
=> Necrons? Were almost my first choice, especially with Terminator 4 just about to hit the cinemas. But they lost. I think they lack some character as they seem to be just another sort of killer machines gone rogue (I know the background as to why they are running around... but still...)
=> As Mr. Holmes almost said: "if you eliminate everything that is wrong, the truth will remain". So with the old army books aside only Tau remained. A rising alien culture which doesn't want to eat, enslave or eviscerate anything else on sight? Bringing sparks of hope and light into the dark, depressive galaxy of the W40k universe? Count me in!
...or that would have been my reasoning if I would have taken the time to do so. In truth I just surfed to the GW homepage, took a quick look over the available armies and then was just caught by the awesome models. Elegant armored infantry with high-tech weapons without the otherwise omnipresent tubes and bolts? Yeah! Floating tanks with railguns? Well, railguns, yeah! And then.. as someone who has been watching anime for the last twenty years (except Gundam, which I just don't like, sort of), a Crisis XV8. Okay, where to make my mark on the conscript documents?
What would be your second piece of advice (after "read the freakin' rules") to a new Tau player?
Listen to the advice of your friends (if they are experienced W40k players). Listen to them when planing to model, paint and play. Consider them but then do your choices what and how to do by yourself. I for myself have to make my own experiences. I can listen to an advice, see that is true but then still have to see for myself if it is really true or if there isn't a way to make it happen nevertheless...
What is your Tau colour scheme?
I've watched all six Star Wars movies about half a week after choosing to play W40k and about half a week before buying my first Tau... well... white it would have to be, snow camo on a frosty planet with lots of sheer rock walls made out of volcanic, black basalt with snow and ice. I ended up with white as main color, black for any lines between model sections, with added grey tones and then a good blue or red as contrast. After looking into Tau codex I ended up with a snow camouflaged Vior'la sept army. I've already painted a couple of gun drones and some crisis weapons with that colors and I am very happy with my choice.
How did you find this site/the old site, and how long have you been a member?
Uncle google said that you would be a good source for modeling advice and painted examples so there was not much way around ATT, was there? Since your primer says to post a member profile first I'd say I'm a member about an hour now ;). Been reading around the hobby section of ATT for three month now, foraging for ideas to personalize my models.
What are the origins of your ATT username?
Eochaid is the second first name of my first Dark Eye (RPG the PC game Drakensang is based upon) mage character. Sort of stuck with me as alias for usenet newsgroups and web forum use.
Have you reviewed the ATT Primers?
Aye, been there, done that. Especially the guidlines sound mostly like the netiquette employed in German usenet newsgrops, except the full real name obligation. I was a bit sceptical about the quality of your forums, having bad experience with some pc and console based forums with lots of flame wars and fanboy discussions. Thats the reason why I normally refrain from posting in web forums in favour of the usenet but ATT is a very nice and positive surprise.
Where and how often to you usually play?
RPG? Each saturday for about ten hours. Console games? About five to ten hours a week. Piano? Seldom...
and in case you've meant W40k - my army is reaching state of full assembly but has to be painted yet. So I still have only played once, making it once a year then ;)
Do you have any other armies, for 40K or another system?
No. ...if my friends keep trying to get me to play other systems, too, then that might evolve into a "no, not yet"... what was the phrase I read here somewhere? A wargamer and his money are easily parted? Right... *sigh*
What is your favourite and least favourite army to play against?
From my glimpses into all army books I guess I don't want to play against orks or marines in the near future since they seem to endorse going into meele. I think I'll try to battle against Imperial Army at first (mostly because my friend with this army has the shortest way to drive to me), Imperial Army and Tau seem to be a good match and perhaps I can bait some of his Cadian troopers to join my just cause!
What is your best and worst 40K moment?
Hmmmz. Again a question more suited to more experienced players. Well... its frustrating to see a Leman Russ take five shots from my Hammerhead in five successive rounds without taking any damage at all (a damaged main gun doesn't count) - on the other hand it was funny to watch my firewarrior squad which was shot down out of a 'fish in the first round and then pummeled by an army squad hiding in a wood until they had to retreat... but then having the last three, brave Shas'la to slow down an incoming sentinel threatening to get into meele with my two crisis suits, giving them enough time to douse the wood with flames and then show the sentinel how a fusion blaster works :)
What does/do your family/significant other/friends think about your 'funny toys'?
Almost all of my friends play some sort of RPG or another, so mostly a mixture of taking no notice and slight interest on that front. Familiy... hasn't commented yet.
What are some of you other interests?
I like console games, I do lots of role-playing, reading Sci-Fi books, play occasionally some piano *shrug*
Do you have any pets?
Only two kroot hounds at the moment... has anyone an advice how to feed them properly? I don't think that it is good to feed them with green mushrooms all the time ;)
What is your favourite band?
Hmmmz. Difficult. I most like listening to Japenese pop, Irish folk and Scandinavian power metal. Judging by my CD rack that would be "Chage&Aska", "Runrig" (both groups older than me) and "Sonata Arctica". I like classic rock, too.
Hope I've got everything covered. I hope my slight tendency to babble will not stop everyone only reading half the post, especially after I had to write most of it twice after I accidently closed my browser after two thirds... -_-
