Well I was busy this weekend doing some casting. I ended up making a series of bases, 25,40, 60mm and large flight. The motivation behind this was I got tired of having bits of sand and rock flake off and need to be glued back on and to add some weight to the bases. Casting them is pretty easy but I wish I had used a different color resin than white. I was going to dye it but all I have left was yellow and that would have defeated the purpose. Anyway here are the results.

These look great. Is the large center peg for holding the dfish?

Exactly. It also fits the piranha with some minor trimming. I was joking with a friend about never having to worry about snapping one again.

Just in case you didn't know you can get clear resin, that way the peg would be clear, just carefully paint the bottom part of the base and bang instant unbreakable clear flying base.

Also since you are using a single side mold with a flat bottom, get ahold of a paint scraper blade and run it over the mold that way it knocks the excess resin off when you skim it with the scraper, you'll have a nice flat bottom on your base when it cures and won't have to file or sand it.

They look great.

BTW when I get around to my suits I am so stealing that idea ;)

It really depends on the kind of base you are working on if you can scrap them or not. For any base with a rim then you shouldn't have a problem scraping them but for bases like the flight ones avoid doing it. It is very easy to pull the resin out of the mold because of the thin edge and the slower setting time at the edges. In some cases you are better off slightly under pouring them this way you only leave a slight ridge that can be easily trimmed. Normally I say skip it and toss them on my belt sander for a couple of seconds. After all, who needs fingerprints :crafty: .

For anyone wanting to make their own bases I came across this link on Chicago Terrain Factory

He takes you through the full process over about 5 pages and has some really good advice if you want to do it yourself.
