Hi everyone,

I've put together a small diorama of some scratch-built terrain I worked on today being reclaimed by an advance party of Kroot.

- An abandoned hab-dome.
- An abandoned defence bunker.
- An abandoned landing pad.
- A silo/ drone launcher tower.

All these were made from bits and pieces I picked up at my local 100 Yen shop. I owe the inspiration to great ideas from here at ATT, especially the idea of using a cheap floor-light for a bunker, which I saw here a few weeks ago and have copied. (Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery. )

Kroot reach the research station complex...

Image
The hab-dome...(Upturned plastic microwave oven bowl.)

Image
The bunker...(Plastic floorlight, disassembled and separated by flying stands. Tower is a disused desk-lamp head unit.)

Image
The landing pad...(Upturned plant pot base.)

I also can combine the different pieces to make larger structures:

Radar dome...

Defence tower with drone launcher...

Image
Colony hub or Outpost tower?

I hope you like them! All comments, feedback and suggestions for improvement are of course welcome.

All the best and thanks for looking,

Grey

Now that looks epic, great job. I especially like the abandoned look you've given them, it works a treat. Have you considered making a communication array or radar dish type section? Or prehaps some empty supply crates or an abandoned vehicle?

You're a man after my own heart; scavaging the everyday and turning them into: . . . . . .[insert imaginative idea]. . . . . .

And yes imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I'm glad my ideas have been of inspiration. ;)

Also, can I say how much I like your Kroot.

Well done and keep us posted.

I like it. I especially like that you can combine the pieces to add a little more variety to the table. I can't wait to see more, keep it up.

Very nicely done. It beats my own worn-out Tau building completely :D
I hope to see some new things soon :)

Really cool, some solid terrain modelling going on of late :)

My only critique would be the drone and XV25 bit attached to the platform, they seem stuck on and out of scale with the rest of your added components, which the latter seem to blend in better due to their more rounded bulk like the 'buildings' they apart of.

Possibly remove them, and blend them into a larger component section over the same space perhaps?

- Tael. :)

Dude!

Sorry I missed the club on Sun, I would have liked to see them in person. Please let us know what you made them out of! (hopefully some Hyakkin stuff so I can grab something on the way home)

Thanks everyone for the comments and compliments! I'll address a couple of them directly here:

Thanks for the compliment! I do have a radar dish that I could use from another bunker/ terrain project I did. You can see that here: (about halfway down)
http://www.advancedtautactica.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=14135&p=175062&hilit=project+bunker#p175062.
I haven't had a go at seeing where I could put it yet though, but because I didn't glue it so it could be moved or left off I could easily use it.

I agree with you! The more I look at it the more out of place it seems. One idea that comes to mind is taking the XV25 bit off, removing the antenna and using the "bulbs" as landing lights. With a couple more I could space them evenly around the landing pad.

...err, absolutely! I posted some pictures of them recently as I added hounds for the first time. You can see them here:
http://www.advancedtautactica.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=14579&p=181073&hilit=kroot#p181073
I have to say that some of the main parts here, like many other things in my apartment, come from the "100 Yen Shop" near where I live outside Tokyo ("Hyakkuen shop" or "Hyakkin" as Ainoshiren correctly says.) so actually, I can't admit to being a true scavenger when some of the pieces cost a dollar each.
The tower was a good scavenge though!
In Japan, most areas make you strictly sort your rubbish before putting it out and my apartment has a special area just for "Small Metal" (lamp stands, wire coat hangers, and anything with metallic components that doesn't go in the "Burnable Rubbish".) excellent place to look.
(Sadly, nearly gone are the days when you could furnish an entire apartment with furniture and stereo from the "Big" rubbish section outside every apartment though...not that the stuff in that section is any good for modelling!)

@Stoopicus & Ainoshiren
I'll try to bring them to our next gaming day - but I'm definitely out of space in my luggage these days!

Thanks everyone for the comments and help. I'm going to see if I can't improve some things based on what's been said and will let you know how it goes.

All the best,

Grey

I like it, especially the modular bit so you can rearrange the pieces into different structures. Well done, sir!

Hi again,

I got around to working on the "Drone Launcher" by adding some actual platforms from which drones might launch. I imagined it somewhat as an elevator system that brings drones up from an underground hub. I'm disappointed with the way the weathering worked out - too intense and doesn't match the other weathering.
Never mind! I can always make it darker.

Please see below for the pics - and some new intel shots of a unit moving through...

Devilfish and Stealth Team move through...
Image

A new Devilfish, fresh of the Sept production line...
Image

Firewarriors move through town, following their Devilfish JUST in case...!
Image

A unit of Firewarriors takes up position in the abandoned bunker to cover the group. At left, the Drone launcher disgorges some functioning drones. (Guess the Earth caste finally got it fixed then!)
Image

Another D-Fish arrives on the landing pad, ready to move off and bring up the rear.
Image

All comments and constructive criticism welcome of course.

Cheers,

Grey
