US Marine Doctrine Manuals

Member DevNichels gives us links for the PDF files of the MCDPs (Marine Corps Doctrinal Publications). This was supplied during discussions on the Theory of War created by member Doombringer.

A very interesting look into the realities of military operations and procedure. Detailed reading. [2011 : PDFs edited and correct by SnorreSelmer]

MCDP 1 Warfighting
MCDP 1-1 Strategy
MCDP 1-2 Campaigning
MCDP 1-3 Tactics
MCDP 2 Intelligence
MCDP 3 Expeditionary Operations
MCDP 4 Logistics
MCDP 5 Planning
MCDP 6 Command and Control

Thanks for the insight DevNichels.

As you can see from the fact that four [intelligence, logistics, planning, and command and control] of the six topics are on non-trigger-pulling functions, there are ten men engaged in drudgery behind the scenes for every one one man out on the line with a rifle. That's the reality of the military. It's 90% "Office Space," and only 10% "Saving Private Ryan." Less than 1% of the American population ever serves in the military, and ~10% of those are actually combat troops... Somebody has to fuel the tanks, somebody has to intercept enemy radio traffic, somebody has to drive the ammo trucks, somebody has to repair tents, somebody has to answer the phone, and so on...

I think MCDP 1-3 and (to a very limted extent) 3 are probably somewhat useful...the rest might make interesting reading for those who are curious about the military, but really don't have anything to teach us about tabletop wargames. I've certainly been able to apply my real world military experience...but I'm in that ten percent that actually does launch hot lead (or, in my case, supersonic depleted uranium) at another human being. So I know 1-3 will have some good stuff in it for wargamers. If you read nothing else, read that one!

Oorah

Unnecessary, I know, and boot-moto, but proud that a Marine Manual and Tau Tactica have finally combined to interest and effect.

Fine by me, enjoy the enthusiasm. They were an enlightening read for this civilian. - Tael.

Stumbled across the following, it seemed like very good insight so I thought I'd share it with y'all.

Quote:
1. Don't forget nothing.
2. Have your musket clean as a whistle, hatchet scoured, sixty rounds powder and ball, and be ready to march at a minute's warning.
3. When you're on the march, act the way you would if you was sneakin up on a deer. See the enemy first.
4. Tell the truth about what you see and what you do. There is an Army depending on us for correct information. You can lie all you please when you tell other folks about the Rangers, but don't ever lie to a Ranger or Officer.
5. Don't never take a chance you don't have to.
6. When we're on the march we march single file, far enough apart so one shot can't go through two men.
7. If we strike swamps or soft ground, we spread out abreast, so its hard to track us.
8. When we march, we keep moving till dark so as to give the enemy the least chance at us.
9. When we camp, half the party stays awake while the other half sleeps.
10. If we take prisoners, we keep 'em seperate till we have had time to examine them, so they can't cook up a story between 'em.
11. Don't ever march home the same way. Take a different route so you won't be ambushed.
12. No matter whether we travel in big parties or little ones, each party has to keep a scout 20 yards ahead, twenty yards on each flank and twenty yards in the rear, so the main body can't be surprised and wiped out.
13. Every night you'll be told where to meet if surrounded by a superior force.
14. Don't sit down to eat without posting sentries.
15. Don't sleep beyond dawn. Dawn's when the French and Indians attack.
16. Don't cross a river by a regular ford.
17. If somebody's trailing you, make a circle, come back onto your own tracks and ambush the folks that aim to ambush you.
18. Don't stand up when the enemy's coming against you. Kneel down, lie down, hide behind a tree.
19. Let the enemy come till he's almost close enough to touch. Then let him have it and jump out and finish him up with your hatchet.
-Major Robert Rogers, Ranger's Orders, 1759
