2. Try highlighting and washing your models, it creates depth and realness to them. As of now, they look flat; gloss won't help much if all it does it makes your model more shiny.

I've done washes on the Kroot and Gue'vasa; are they not too apparent? I've been experimenting with highlighting lately, but I'm not sure I'm too good at it.

3. The tyranids... I'm not sure how to say this but I think they are not properly defined, it looks like you haven't finish painting it (or if you have not, then please ignore the following).
For example your Tyrannofex, if I'm right, your paints were too thin and had added a lot of water, this can be seen as the carapace is not evenly painted, there's patches of paint on it that I believe it's because paint accumulated there? Try not to soak too many paints onto your brush when you paint and a mixture of 1:1 between water and paint should be sufficient.
The other thing would be the gun (the head?), the scything talons and the tail are of same colour. In my opinion details like claws, talons, flesh/muscle and bones should be of different colour or properly defined; the only separation of parts/bitz I see in your model is the carapace and everything else. What I would suggest is to look at GW painted ones for reference, or if you would like to, my painted Tyranids although it's no where near masterclass standard but I try to differentiate/contrast each unique parts of the model.

With my Tyranids, I was aiming for them to have a fleshy, organic 'rotten beef' look like they could start crawling off the stands--however, you're right that I probably screwed up the 'Fex carapace.

I have however recently made a Tervigon that's sort of going with your suggestion; I'll post pics when I can.

Quote:
The overall quality of your models can be enhanced as long as you remember the basic techniques.
1. Paint layers of evenly mixed paint with water. Layer"s", not one thick layer.
2. Wash your models (holes, gaps, panels, crevices) with either GW washes or DIY washes. If you're using GW washes, water them down a tiny bit first.
3. Highlight edges of your model, parts where it would appear brighter and parts where it would glow, etc. your vehicle engines and weapons such as the fusion cascades on your XV9.
Please try looking at the tutorials at ATT itself, I've learned much from there.

I'll see what I can do. Regardless, thanks for the advice!

As a disclaimer--yes, I know the flash on these was probably a bit much, but I suck with the camera I'm using right now.

Painted escape pod from earlier:

And now my Tervigon--I'm rather pleased with how this turned out overall. I think I did a better job with the carapace than with the last beastie, although there's still room for improvement, and I think it turned as suitably fleshy and organic as I was aiming for.

And now, a new vehicle--went for a 'Tiger Shark' effect with this one. Sort of in response to suggestions here, I gave it a subtle blue wash, and I'm not sure how visible it is in these photos, but it's there. I think the HH railgun came out well, though.

As Hammerhead:

I recently obtained a whole box of Tau stuff for a bargain price, including various half-painted battlesuits, vehicles, etc. I've begun work on sprucing some of it up to fit in with my existing army, so here's what I've done so far:

A bunch of battlesuits, about 90% done. The conversions aren't mine, but I kept 'em anyway.
Image

New Devilfish, about 75% done. This is the pattern I'm going for with this.

And now, in lieu of 6th Ed rules, an AA gun to serve as part of my fortifications:

That is a very cool AA gun. Far more Tau-ish than a quad auto cannon.

Id consider shamelessly stealing the idea but looks like the project chewed through quit a few burst cannons which I just don't have

Thanks! I used a total of four burst cannons; you may want to see if you have any spare vehicle ones if you want.

Any other thoughts from anyone else?

Twin ion cannons look amazing when put on their side - bottom to bottom. The Y shaped bits that would normally stick out the top give it that quad gun look when coming out the sides.

Any thoughts?

I'm also thinking of doing some Tau analogues to Aegis lines, but I'm not sure where to start.

I really like it, I'm thinking about making my own to stand-in for the Long Barrelled Burst Cannons for my Hammerhead.

To save on burst cannons you could use brass rods for the section between the BC body and the last barrel spacer disc at the end.

That would mean you would have the same effect using only 2 x BC's.

As the Aegis has a quad autocannon and a single lascannon you could use 1 XV88 railgun to replace the las but not sure what would be the best to have the same effect as the autocannon mount. Perhaps missile pods or quad LBBC like you did previously.

This burst thing is meant to count as a quad gun; I do have an actual lascannon lurking somewhere at the bottom of my bits, so any ideas on how to Tau-ify that would be appreciated.

Any ideas on Tau Aegis lines, as I asked? I've seen suggestions of barricades made from drone saucers from the Apocalypse rulebook IIRC, but I don't have enough spare...

Do you have the Cities of Death book? Maybe a line similar to the one on page 69? It's a little big and uses a lot of vehicle pieces, but it looks really nice.

Polystyrene coving? You can get big stuff that'd be battlesuit sized (10cm) and miniature coving that's only 1-2cms high.
It'd be around £3-5 per meter, and fairly easy to cut and score panel lines into. Also comes with ready made inside and outside corners.

Looked it up--certainly looks impressive, but I doubt I can find the parts.

That looks like it might be very useful--thanks!

Are there any other suggestions?

Alright, here's what I've done for an Aegis line so far:

And an update on the Nid front:

As far as the aegis line you could go your local hardware store ie: lowes or home depot and pick up about 3' of floor trim molding. You can get it really small with regards to height and cut it into (4) 4" pieces and (4) 2-3" pieces and you will have a tauish style aegis line. It will have grooves in it as to look like tau structure as well, especially if you can find a small "ogee" style cut. It's a 3-4 tier trim usually seen on granite counter tops. Also you could take a look at paulson games, he makes mech style weapons that look very similar to railguns but could be used for a home made quad gun.

I'll see what I can do. For now I'm seeing what I can do with what I have on hand.

Any thoughts on my 'Nid, btw? ;)

Hello again,

You might want to take your picture without using the flash, it makes your models looks very glossy, unless you did gloss them and as I have suggested months ago, try not to because most details are fine without the added shine. Only if you want something to look gooey, slimey or coagulated blood, then gloss can be needed.

Also, you can try taking pictures in frontal view of the models and a bit further from the model. It's rather hard to give an opinion since there are several obstructions to the photo.
