Hi All,

One major thing to restart my painting of late is a Warhammer Quest project shown above. I had always liked the idea of a 3D dungeon, always have, but soon it drifted behind a Cadre of Tau models. Here is the site showing how good this French guy's work above is : Building 3D Dungeons using Hirst Arts Molds.

He has based it off Warhammer Quest and the old wonder game, Heroquest. Two of my personal top favourite boardgames. Besides my Tau and a handful of Marine, my WQ characters and beasties were the rest.

Suitably inspired, I've been renovating figures and currently have several on the go with about 90% completion, bases yet to be decided on the colour of my dungeon scenery. I've even started building up some peasants for local village scenarios using outdoor village buildings and terrain as soon as I can.

Hmm, yes yes this looks very nice....my only problem is that the dwarf 3-stage hero seems to switch weapon hands.

Could you tell us more about the gameplay?

Super Cool. My first lead mini's were in a game like this I got for Jesus Birthday Party back in the mid 1980's. Can't think of the name of it anymore but it had a Dungeon on paper and some mini's with paint and rules. They game out with a plastic version later. I think I have the dungeon in a box in the attic with my D&D stuff, I should dig it out and scan a copy to post.

Basically, Warhammer Quest is the GW version of Dungeons and Dragons. It had a basic ruleset and a more RPG ruleset. It was very engaging and too much fun. The precursor and my hook into miniatures in general was Heroquest by Milton and Bradley. Unfortunately I missed out on Advanced Heroquest which was the father of Warhammer Quest.

Instead of rambling on, check out those links, Boardgames Geek is a great site and they detail the essentials very well.

More soon :)

Wow... talk about oldies... but excellent oldies !
First mini game I ever played, but I lost them... Cursed be my grandmother who thought there were just a "bunch of unuseful scraps".
I had all : HeroQuest, the 2 expansions and (included in the 1st pack) a whole new dongeon... on 4 maps...
Such memories :::(

About your miniatures selection, I just approve all, the all choice being coherent enough not to hurt the eyes.
Special appreciation for the dwarves ladies, the last 2 being used by one of my friends for her army...

Me and my gaming group still play WHQ on a(n ir)regular basis. Quite simply, I love it, they love it, we all love it! I will say that I'm unfamiliar with several of your character types though Tael, particularly the Huntress and Healer. Are they extra characters like the Warrior priest, or am I just being delusional again?

In any case, I don't see a wizard! Easily the best character! How could you not make one!

No guesses as to who I always play as...

Looking forward to seeing how these guys progress :)

I like your train of thought with this! Is the liche king model that one on the CMON site? I'm tempted to pick it up just to paint. Fantastic model :)

I've had some models for quest all prepped to paint, but no one really plays around here! A shame, but I guess I'll have to live vicariously through projects like this :P

side track, sorry. I started with the first Basic D&D, (yes the blue book with the cut apart chits for dice since multisided dice were still very rare) but my first mini's were from an older game than Heroquest. I cann't believe I found it in the attic! circa 1981, Crypt of the Sorcerer. I have the board and rules for it and the second game, Caverns of Dooms. It had lead minis, paints, and lead to me writing my own game rules( which I also found in the same file!) ahhh, memories......

Someone else scanned theirs here: http://ns1.argontech.net/~kaptain/paint%20&%20play/knights%20and%20magic%20collection/crypt%20of%20sorcerer/Crypt%20of%20the%20Sorcerer.htm

The new character models will fill into roles such as Warrior Priest or similar. Though there is a wealth of well written Character packs online. Folks have had years to refine them.

And yes, the Liche is the one off CMON. It is simply the most intimidating undead leader I have seen. No theatrics, no sword waving or scrreching.. just a cold, withering regard of those he is about to slay..

Just finished the Air Elemental and friends today. Working on a Snotling pickpocket and finishing off the Barbarian. hopefully some new bits are in the mailbox today :D

Ahhh … this reminds me of my starter drug “StarQuest”. Very nice!

I always want to buy some of those Hirst Art Molds to create a SpaceHulk. The link about the 3D Dungeon could encourage me to convince one of my friends to do it after all …

Freebooter also fabricates some very good character models. They do not have the classical look, but the look great nevertheless :)

I am looking forward to some updates :)

I thought the same thing, although here in the States it was called "Space Crusade". My extra bits and Dreadnought expansion from eBay are German "StarQuest" versions, though. As difficult as they are to find, it's nice to see someone else who got started that way. :D

@Shavaun

So then, it would be amazingly unfair to show you this, 3.0 Space Hulk Board.

On page 3 he has a revamped version in more neutral tones too. All made from Sci-Fi Hirst Arts molds.

Some Resources :
[The Usual Tael Approved Kind]

The Folks Behind Heroquest
A complete write up on the Heroquest creators. Quite interesting actually, for example; Heroquest faded out as the original creator did not want to sell off the rights.

Warhammer Quest Chronicles
Very complete and well laid out site. Good links section and resources.

Warhammer Quest Museum
Less on layout, more on huge content. Great support to your gaming.

Worldworks Gaming Products
If you're still hankering for paper based game boards.. get yourself into the future now. These are brilliant.

Some inspiring Room Boards for those wondering why I'm so enthused..

Unfortunately, my “StarQuest” disappeared during the last cleanup. I think that it makes a small boy somewhere in Germany very happy now … the seeds were sown :)

Not to say cruel :D It took me month to get this kind of pictures out of my mind I hate you :P ;)

And since we are a little megalomaniac, we planed to make the corridor so broad that a Terminator and a Cybot could stand abreast. We wanted to play small 40K games without vehicles and weapons with S7+. Just infantry and walkers.
It also should have made Battlefleet Gothic a little bit more interesting, because every boarding action would have been played on this board. We estimated that a normal BFG-Game would have been stretched to a weekend … :)

Nevertheless ... I will bookmark this link :D

Or making-of video of that type of thing. If only I had enough time...

I never played Warhammer Quest, but I think I'll have to dust off HeroQuest again. Thanks for the reminder!

Okey! Now I hate you too hazmatt :P

You broke the dam and now I need enough money and time to make my own SpaceHulk. I only can hope that my injury will slow me down that my brain can catch up so I will be aware that I really do not need it and that I already have enough projects to keep two Shavauns busy for two lives :D

Uuughh... late..night.. converting..

So.. guess what arrived in the post last night and Tael collected at 10pm after dinner out with the lads?.. Yes, the Bretonnian Project parts. I'll post the WiP of my maniacal idea.

I've already hit a wall, a tough choice between very classic Bretonnian Knight, or a look akin to a Baron level hero. I'll post comparisons. The issue is really down to theme. A Knight or an uber-hero (which seems a bit overkill for a Quest character..)

In other news, Chaos Knights are bigger than Space Marines :-? (explanations soon ;))

Oh my gosh...that would be SO FUN!!

About the Hirst Arts in general, for a long time now I have wanted to get some molds and make a spaceship, for Space Hulk....only there aren't Tau in space hulk and I honestly don't like playing as anyone else in the least. Always wanted to get the one with the Tau-looking crates at least. But my plaster skills are bad.

Now thugh I really want to get some molds and make a Tau spaceship for boarding actions....I just need to get BFG too! :P

Anyways Tael this is looking really good! Although I can't say I like the mass of conflicting colors for each different section...

Mmmm I would agree on the multiple colours being a bit off putting. I'm interested in themed dungeons. Old World, Khemri and Lustria. nice gothic/dark and dank Orc lair; Dusty, Egyptian with sand and all; Aztec with lush vines, etc and all the usual temple stylings.

Then build complete beasteries for each and several major encounter groups.

But.. I did say, I would post some images :
ISO was messing with me, that and changing daylight issues.. still, simple rushed WiP images ;)

The dilemma, a classic Bretonnian look..
Image Image

Or a Bretonnian Baron look..
Image Image

Then there's the shoulder armor.. Bretonnian Shield or Full Pauldrons (removed spikes etc)..
Image Image

Close ups on chest details, scabbard, tabard and broadsword (to have a small shield GS'd onto the 'guard..
Image Image
Image

Bit of fun..
Image

..and The Scribe 'Look forth Mi'lord! A mighty beast for you to slay whilst I sit back and write about it!'
Image

These are part of a Militia I am painting up. Based off Advanced Heroquest Men at Arms. Being me, I just couldn't let an opportunity pass, so I modified most of them. These are a few examples..
Image Image

Did I mention I bought two of everything? ...and a Chaos Steed.. ;)

Also, waiting on some Bretonnian Men at Arms bits for some conversion mayhem, any Knight worth his weight in gold (with full body armor thats like.. a lot) should have a retinue! ;)
