@TonkaThe pouch on his waist is a bolt quiver for a X-Bow across his back. You could easily have said what's that about his paunch too Rather rotund Dwarf this one. @Crunchy_MonkAye, Heroquest is what got me into the hobby. My first painted models were with poster paints.. which unsurprisingly flaked off. I have since learned a lot about slapping acrylic on miniatures, by example... the Night Goblin Squig mascot : Completed this afternoon in the last tones of daylight before getting stuck into a design project. Using Mechrite Red as the upper skin tone, blended down with Dwarf Flesh and Tanned Flesh. Scorched Brown to deepen the creases and outline the teeth (Scorched/Khemri/Bleached Bone/White). He's not attached presently as I am still working on the Goblin boss. The eye is Vermin Brown, Iyanden Darksun and Bleached bone mixes for highlights. Scorched Brown to outline and add a darkened edge. Really enjoyed painting the lil'biter, spent more TLC on him than the entire 30 odd regiment I've just finished (photos next time). - Tael.

You know Tael, the bad thing, about you being back, is that you make me want to paint my old Breton models. Maybe I do just that, since my other project is a little delayed.

Those eyes are insanely well done! Sorry, no content in this reply. Just an expression of amazement. These kind of images makes me want to improve my painting!

@CheFunnily enough, you posted a similar comment a year ago to the day. @PatchoroThanks man, with bugged out orbs I can't resist doing a soft gem effect. Been admiring your weathering fetishes in your blog myself. @TerminatorinhellCheers man, he's getting a redo presently. Possibly be a week before he reappears. More images soon, finished the Goblin regiment (sans bases) and did some greenwork on the Lesser Orcs and non-military Goblins. - Tael.

@CheChuckle.. maybe Update : Goblin unaligned mob More unaligned goblin models using my 40k Grot heads and Night goblin arms. Really liking these less comical (than usual) more malicious look. Okay, the Smurf hat was an attempt at comedy. On review, I've been so busy trying to make them non military, that I have given them a default look with the shields. I'm going to snap these off and give them assorted shields.. y'know, from all the adventurers they've killed before you get to meet them. - Tael.

Worked on the goblins this weekend, using a variety of browns and the occasional dry red. They've turned up pretty good with the rather straight forward paint schemes and technique I've been using, again the subtleties have been lost to my digital camera blending the tones. I also rented out The Labyrinth again for my ignorant girlfriend.. deep patient sigh.. that film rocks on so many levels. I didn't realise just how many quotes I use from this film even today as an adult... Oooooh whatta lie!, ..she thoroughly enjoyed it, now completely understanding of my oddball sense of the Comic. And the noble Fox Knight, Sir Didymus.. he's the voice of every Knightly hero I've ever acted out. I really think, if I ever have kids, I'll ensure they see this film to give them an idea of fun, absurd and joyful humour. Three foot goblin knight with a double handed six foot broadsword? Yes please. Expect Brian Froud inspired goblins shortly. He was the art direction behind the latter and The Dark Crystal. No surprise I've been modelling slimmer goblins without realising what I am really aiming for. Right, the Goblins! More soon folks - Tael."Dance... dance magic dance.."

I could never get past the monsters who pulled their own heads off in the Labyrinth, it was just too scary.
Very clean and bright goblins. So that's rope on the shields, what do you think about its dynamic on the middle goblin on the second image?

Teal,
I love this tread! Heroquest was my introduction to the gaming world, in fact I've got two copies of it under the stairs still waiting to be painted. This has certainly inspired me to get HQ out and get it painted up.
Labyrinth, what a great film, my wife's favorite in fact. The goblins in it are iconic, their look has kind of been the bench-mark ever since. You've definitely captured that look with yours.
Great soundtrack too!!!
You remind me of the babe..... What babe? Babe with the power..... What power? Power of voodoo..... who do? You do..... Do what? Remind me of the babe!

@J8Yeah, those dismembering characters in Labyrinth were disconcerting alright. Meant to be fun but comes off really creepy. As for the shield, just noticed that. Ah well.. probably mark it as one of the goblins to get a scavenged shield other than their uniform beastman shields. @Rus'ElWell, hope you like the goblins showcased today, they're about as close a nod to a Brian Froud goblin as I can get without serious green stuff work! @DonpinoNo problem man, it's been dormant for over a year while life got hectic for me Update!Right, I was working on the goblins, but got side tracked by y et another villager figure. The local shoe and clothes repair guy.. a Halfling I've had for awhile now. He used to have a rather ungainly looking punchfist, which I removed and resculpted his left hand over the bag behind to hide the snipping damage after I did so. Pretty chuffed on how smooth the small modification came up. Painted his fabrics to stand out and then dressed him down a little. I might repaint the staff as it seems a little too close in hue to the boots. Overall, enjoyed emphasising his expression Though I did indeed work on those Froud inspire goblins.. Using Gnoblar parts and some small greenstuff work to give them more goblin chins, I added a helm to one. Currently the lad on the left, with helmet and big bashing mace is my favourite. Almost ready to name him something like Bogrid Stunty-Masher ...or sum'fink y'know wot I mean..?These two represent the new direction I will take future dungeon denizens. They're not from armies or major allegiances, these monsters are at home in dungeons and running mob like raids out into the country side. So at best, a majority of their gear is looted or from ill-favoured heroes who have disappeared into said dungeons. In the prior case, a bunch of dwarves.. well, they didn't make it out when they met Bogrid and his pals.. More soon Tael.

These new goblins look so happy and pleased about their looted gear. Actually that halfling looks pretty smug too, but then he does have some fancy cloths (including purple).

@J8Cheers man, yeah, pretty chuffed with the little guy. Thinking random tailor heroes can come across between towns. A magic enchanter of clothing or swindler, depending on the roll of the die Did some block work last night on the base colours for the goblins, then finished them off this afternoon over and hour. A few small details like teeth, wolf hair and some armor work, but largely this mob of Goblins is complete : (Now with Random Shields!) Finally, here's Bogrid the Stunty-Smasher Been fun working on this mob, in the mail right now is a infestations worth of new Skaven plastics! Huzzaahhhh!.. cough.. I mean, Yes! Yesss!- Tael...oh, and some parts that remarkably look barbarian worthy..ignore me, I have said too much..(/fade to black)

Been a few distractions of late, other projects, work and my girl flew up for an extended weekend. Nice. With all under control and my lass back in Melbourne, I turned my attention back to the snarly Skaven models acquired from Island of Blood set. They're great fun to paint and readily show up detail for minimal effort. So far about 2hrs a piece, with an average of three levels of work. Base, Detail, highlight. The light was a little harsh today, but eventually I'll do a studio level shoot of the entire dungeon zoo. A variety of colours used in the clothing, with Scorched Brown base for fur. This is then detailed with small hair strokes using Calthan Brown. Very quick an effective fur, though not easily seen here (so ready to go Camera shopping now) Other than that, the usual Boltgun base, Badab/Devlan wash and then Chainmail highlight for metals. More soon as I tackle updating the venerable Heroquest Barbarian to something respectable in Warhammer Quest - Tael.

Nice! You started this project again! Let me see where I stopped last time ... The Dwarf (aka the booze buddy of guBman *hiks*) looks amazing! I love the face and the axe. Could it be that you used NMM on the axe blade or is it a mix of washes and what not that gives it that look? Whatever you did there, it looks very nice. Shas’El Tael wrote: Presumably he'll run right into this lot and lose another limb.. Yeah, maybe, but he will crawl through the dirt with the aid of his tongue to get to the gold (after that he will spend the gold to buy enough bear to flush away the bitter aftertaste) Thank you for your Goblin skin recipe! That reminds me of another project ... The only thing I do not like on the new Night Goblins is the facial expression, it is just too mean. The old ones looked more like rascals to me. The skin colour looks great, though. I like the greenish-yellowish highlights. The squig is even more awesome! Not only the eye, although it looks fantastic, I also like the blending from the top of the squig to the belly. Very smooth. (Never knew that there are squigs with handle ) Your random talk about the film The Labyrinth (which, I think, I have never seen) reminded me of a little scenario I saw some time ago. After some searching I found it again (and it turned out that it is a model by Werner Klocke). Maybe you can make something like this. I always have to laugh when I see this two. The though of a Goblin duel is just too bizarre! I love the way how heroic the Goblins enter the fray (look at the nose ) Do I have to say something about the shields? I hope that the chippings on the yellow shield are real cuts, but I think I know it better Nice work. So keep it coming, and if you still need some GorkaMorka Orks, let me know -Shavaun

@Sha'Vaun,Thanks man, glad you had a good read to catch up. I agree the new goblins are more vicious than rascal. I wanted something more gritty than usual, so a lot of the Zoo life and heroes will be more dungeon ready than usual. In keeping with this slimmer theme to Goblins and Orcs, I have to model like a dervish because most GW ranges are over scale. I am enjoying the new Skaven Plastics and look forward to working on some Beastmen soon. I'll shout out if I need some more GorkaMorka orks, thanks for the offer! @TheambitFur? Sure thing. I spent a short while taking several images and finally settled on this fairly good example. I have scaled it close to original size to give a better idea of the overall effect this fur technique has for Troop pieces (allows me room to go to town on Infamous heroes of the Skaven) UPDATEI have been working on upgrading the old Heroquest Barbarian (90% done) to use in Warhammer Quest. He was my first painted Hero when I was 13, the following is a new piece I bought on eBay. Added some putty to fill in the badly formed temples (which gave him broad eye sockets), added a more dynamic fringe and remodelled the sword. Additionally placed a satchel and a collection of bone runes, teeth and a health flask alongside a coil of rope (the most important dungeon accessory). Overall a badly formed miniature to try and paint, but.. I can't pass over this old favourite piece. The imagery is a bit washed out, currently building a nice photo booth for future images! The Comparison, 19 years ago.. (wow, seeing that in print is nuts) Quote: Deftly parrying the lethal blow, Aerius darted back through the vault doorway. "I cannot make way, they fight with such disregard I can but only defend myself" The adventurers looked to each other, seemingly stumped by these Orcs, ensconced in their small trophy room. "The winds are weak here, I cannot change your luck much my Elven friend" Resting with his staff close at hand, the wizard leaned back against the cavern wall, an eye on the dimly lit vault entrance. "Aye, we might need turn back eh?" grunted Snorri, still nursing several blows to his armoured hide. Slowly, the sound of a blade's edge unsheathing, grated through their verbal despair. Reflected torchlight glinting about the cavern walls. "Fjolner vants his turn vis thees Orcs" the Barbarian spoke for his favoured two hand greatsword, the mighty northern blade firmly held in solid fists. Tholvar pushed past Aerius, his keen hunter's eyes seeking out the shapes in the gloom ahead, then with a grunt he stepped into the darkness. An all too familiar cacophony of sound erupted, metal striking metal, bellows and guttural yells renewed. Amidst this din, with it's own methodical rhythm, wet chopping sounds began to quiet the rabble. The roar of a man became the signature sound among beastial cries, soon becoming wails in flight. After a moment of silence, a viscera encrusted mask appeared just beyond the torchlight glow, "Vell? vehn you arh ready?" Tholvar returned to the shadowed vault interior, surely examining the loot amidst the dead. His gathered companions looked to each other again, a little taken aback at the abrupt turn in fortune. "It appears Aerius, there are indeed times you fight brutality with a measure of it's own" The Elf eyed the aged human wizard while the party leader walked into the silent room ahead, after a moment he sheathed the fine elvish blade with a smirk and followed after. Bring on the nostalgia! Tael.

No sooner had my paint station been setup than I got stuck into some old school Kev Adams Orc and Snotling figures : I've gone to town on these Snotlings, and when I get my hands on the others I have done before I'll repaint them in a similar manner. I've decided to do away with red eyes and make then a Tau Sept Ochre colour with Red wash overtop, gives the eyes a disturbing strained feel and is somewhat halfway between red and yellow. I think painting the Skaven may have pushed me in the direction. These two characters are part of my anti-hero group. The Goblin Villan (Dwarf) and the Gruff Savage Orc (Barbarian). I've picked up an array of victims for them to dungeon crawl against sometime soon. I've bought a Chaos Renegade addition and currently eyeing off a Chaos Sorcerer to round out the evil group. The painting was fairly straight forward with various blends between highlights and drybrushings : Valljeo Olive Grey Knarloc Green Cammo Green Highlights Red Wash Black Wash Devlan Mud Metals Scorched Brown Calthan Brown Naturally the bases are not completed, until I begin building the dungeons, makes little sense to do so at this point. Ultimately a ORc and Goblin Dungeon, Skaven Warren, Undead Tomb and Lustrian Temple are on the cards. Hope you enjoyed this first update for the year! - Tael.
