@ Wolfs16
I'm using shadow grey for my armor so I'm assuming space wolves grey would be my highlights? And I do not know how to make a gem but I'm practicing with every model, that tutorial helps though, its a lot better than others I've seen :)
The pose on the suit is pretty static, in some ways its meant to be like that, I'm trying to make it look very heavy and slow. The arms are aren't doing much because they don't have to do anything really :P Although some swing to them could give a walking type look. Another thing is I was holding the model in my hand to get light in the crevices, heres a pic of it standing in its base (no blue tack needed to make is stand :) ) It gives it a little more movement I think.

Practiced some highlighting as Wolfs16 suggested. Now this is my first attempt so I'm putting it on fairly lightly.

Ive just done the cloth and chest area, suggestions/comments before I continue?

Edit: I guess I decided to keep going on the pathfinder :)
Highlighted the rest of the armor, heres how he looks:

The mini Tau symbol on the back is also space wolves grey so It matches the highlights, I'm not sure if thats an issue, it looks like it confuses the camera a bit but I can always paint that white I suppose.

Also, my eyepieces are scorpion green (lighter) and goblin green (darker). I'm not too familiar with the colors but as the tutorial suggested 3 colors is there another I should get? Or should I mix the darker with some chaos black or vise versa, the lighter with white to achieve a third color for gemming?

Okay, you are making some good progress! Your enthusiasm for your cadre is contagious, so keep it up! Now, let's get down to business.

The highlights are a good start, but I think I know what is lacking: black lining. Take a look for a second at one of my Firewarriors.

On the left you will see the model when I first attempted it. Totally plain! Then on the right you will see my first attempt at highlighting. I use Adeptus Battlegrey as my base color and highlight it with a 50/50 mix of Space Wolves Grey and Codex Grey. I think it really helps make everything pop. But what really makes the difference is using black ink between each panel line and to separate the armor sections from the clothe. That can really make it look 3D. Also, I think you should try and similar highlight to what I have done, using 50/50 Codex Grey and Space Wolves Grey. I think it will blend in a bit better.

I will have more for you when I get back home! :)

Now you've got me confused lol. I have all the panel gaps washed and blackened already, I can go back and give it another layer but I'm not sure it would get any darker :P
From your pictures though it looks like I should make thicker highlight lines so they are more obvious, and I will be sure to try out codex grey/ space wolves grey mixing.
I know that the panel gaps are pretty small on the metal pathfinders so that might have something to do with it? I'll try my hand at highlighting a firewarrior as well to see how it looks.

Okay, let me clear that up. To black line, I was using straight Blank Ink, not a wash. I have found that an ink gives a bold look, while a wash looks a bit faded. Do you have any black ink? Also, are you washing the armor with Badab Black? I think that explains why it looks different. I would recommend highlighting before adding the wash. Try experimenting a little.

As for the thickness of the panel lines, I prefer them to be a bit thicker on armor since I feel like it makes segmented Tau armor really stand out.

Oh no I don't wash the models. I just use a combination of wash and black ink to darken the panel lines, not the actual armor. If I need it darkened considerably like if I made a mistake I will use black ink, if its just to darken over the black base I will use wash.

Quick update, I purchased another scalpel, a much nicer one I might say that can interchange blades in case I break another, and a model saw so I don't break another :D

Also picked up some 8 cadians cheap in a discount bin. I plan on using them for kroot chests and left over bits for possible basing bits.

I plan on using them to similiar effect to what Wolf16 created a while back:

Found here http://www.advancedtautactica.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=16408&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=40

Simply for reasons of fluff and personal taste. I however didn't realize the ones I have have a gaping hole in the middle of their chest as part of the gun assembly. A simple fix up, I could use the green stuff practice anyways :P

Anywho back to work! I'll paint a bit more for some feedback then get straight to that suit!

Blind is back, now a legal adult in the U.S. whoo! :D
While I would of liked to give the kroot some chest armor, I do have plenty of bubble wrap bodies to do so with, so I went ahead and figured out my Kroot color scheme. I wanted them dark to fit the feel of the rest of the army, this is what I got:

He isn't quiet as dark as the picture makes him out to be so the contrast of color and shading is a bit more apparent, you get the idea though :)

I didn't forget about the Deathrain suit, not too much progress but I moved around the jet pack and thickened the chest up a bit

Image

On a side note I played a small 1500 Nids+Tau vs. Crons(I didn't bring many units with me, nids and Tau working together heh) on a Take-And-Hold game. We ended up winning of course, mainly thanks to the ridiculous survivability of the Hive Tyrant, it ended up stunning the enemy Monolith in combat for a bit since my HH couldn't manage to kill it :( All in all it wasn't an amazing game for the Tau, without the abundance of vehicles at just 750 pts they couldn't do much anything to crons aside from the deathrains I had brought along.
