Very nice so far, what are you concocting for the Gor's skin?

Thanks for the details on the red, I'm doing something similar; but I may fiddle with more purples.. I suspect this gives a richness that I'm missing.

The Gor's skin was an absolute bugger to sort out - but it was an excuse to try some of the new fleshy tones from the new GW range (which I really rather like). Couldn't even begin to give you a proper list, but in essence I went with Ratskin flesh as the base, and then worked up from there - but mixing in some blues in the shadows.

One day I will buy myself a notebook and keep a log of all this, but I quite like the feeling of victory I get by stumbling upon the solution!

Ahhh, new Citadel paints.. hmmm.

I do keep a recipe book for my painting work and I tell you what, its priceless. I've been able to pick up year old project and not miss a shade from previous models. Highly recommend it to large group work (warbands etc) if you often get called away by Real Life(tm).

Thanks Joek :)

Certainly admire the skill on show; of late I've become a follower of the dark brown base for Orc skin - giving them a earthy grimed feeling.

I believe in this piece, the energetic green and reds really sell the action of the model.

Yeah, the browns do give the things just a touch more 'realism' - as much as is possible I guess. Purple might be interesting as well. However, I kind of just wanted it to be a fairly bright, vaguely 'EM-style orc I think!

I do like the figure, but there are some really very lazy bits of sculpting on it - those 'bones' on the side of the right leg for instance. I have absolutely no idea what they're supposed to be! The sculpted base is especially odd inasmuch as when they decided to make the cuts on the sculpt for moulding, they decided it would be a wonderful idea to leave all 5 toes on his right leg on the base itself!

Anyway, I'm nearly done on this one:

Funny that, was just thinking the same about the axe - what are you doing colour wise to get that nice depth of colour?

Application is fairly obvious - its the graduation I'm admiring :)

Actually, the base of the axe was a Vallejo model colour...Dark Sea Blue and it was basically just worked up from there with increasing amounts of white. What I did do though was put on a thin wash of green ink...this was purely done because I had it on the brush and thought I'd see how it looked! Very lazy I know!

Only other thing was to use some black wash lightly on the parts closest to the wooden parts which helped with the depth a bit.

Something which I did pick up the other day was a pot of Winsor and Newton Matt medium. I've used other ones, but this one is absolutely brilliant really helps with smoothing things out. Helping me a lot with getting rid of some of the worst sins of my painting :p

I was going to pick some up the other day but I'm not totally clear on exactly what it does, so I saved my pennies. What is the effect it has on the paint?

Well, there's various difference ones, but in general what they do is simply make the paint more fluid without losing the intensity of the original colour (as long as you don't flood the paint with it!). It makes the time you have to blend and just move the paint around much longer. It also helps when you make a mistake...you can simply rub the paint off and do it again.

It's not a substitute for water or anything like that, but I do find it very useful for the way I paint I have to say.

Painted this up over the weekend (took around 3 hours all told I guess), for a bit of a tutorial for another forum I frequent. Didn't spend half enough time cleaning and prepping, but for the purposes of the tutorial it wasn't what I was going for really. Having said that, I was pleasantly surprised by the end result, and now rather regret I didn't clean it up a bit more :p

That is a great looking dark angel Joek. I envy your ability to create something so striking in a mere 3 hours. the highlights are crisp, the lenses look great and the green shifts nicely. My favourite part of the model has to be free hand symbols though. the mix of white and grey really makes them stand out.

My brother recently picked up a dark vengeance box and mentioned to me that he was looking for a good dark angels guide. Would it be possible for you to share the link (either here or through pm) to the tutorial you used?

Well, the link is below...

Although I should point out that due to the forum now being a full on 'painty' one, it's me waffling on somewhat! However, if your brother or anyone else can get something from it, please make use of it :). For once I did do step by steps of all the processes!

Work on a SW terminator...

Image

Despite my initial fondness of these figures when they were first released, I have to say that I find them a bit dull really - I'm hopeful that the base will enthuse me somewhat . Although...I am quite happy that the face is getting there on him - it was a right bugger getting an eye on him

Very nice, liking the bone work on the right shin - what colours are you using there? :)

Thanks Seb. I think I've found my ideal bone colour :) .

Base of Baneblade brown, then a brown wash all over.

Reapply the brown, and then highlight with Deneb stone (or rarkath flesh...I think it's called something like that), and then final highlights with VMC Silvergrey.

It's a nice dirty bone colour :)

EDIT: in other news, I'm happy to see the work you're doing with young Mike at Twilight! Lovely stuff Seb. It's nice to be a part of that world! He's sending me a rather big Belan beast to paint up! I'm both excited and nervous...it'll be the biggest thing I've done for ages!

:)

The mould line on the Dark Angel was completely down to my rushing through it for the purposes of the tutorial...although since i did it i went back and fixed it a little. With the Space Wolf, you won't see that one as I haven't put on the big shoulder pads yet.

I've got more excuses coming up :p
