You should make it appear really hot, maybe on fire and have it melting the near by ice and possibly some steam coming off the blade.

That would be awesome!

Being on a day off and having time to paint, I'm cracking on with the Bloodletter.

Image

Aside from some work on the hilt of the sword (god, I loathe brass - it takes so many layers to get it up to what you need it to be!), it's almost done. I want to at least get it placed on the base, so's I can get his line of sight right and proper. Any other touchups can be done afterwards (I'll only pin and fix him to the base after all the rest of the pieces are finished.

I put a little pin on the bloodletter's feet so I could tinker around with it on the base...

Obviously, the base isn't finished at all yet (I had an idea today of doing some sort of chaos monolith in it as well! Foam, polyfilla are drying as we speak!), but hopefully you're getting the idea of what's gonna happen now.

It's looking really good right now Joek. The only critique is changing the blue tongue to a purple or something darker. It's hard to take a demonic bloodletter seriously with a bright blue tongue. Just doesn't scream KHORNE, BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD or anything like that. Otherwise, really nice blending on the sword/skin. Are you going to paint the firewarrior the same way as your other ones?

Yeah, the FW will fit in with my army (well, such as it is - six figures and counting folks!). I'm sad and mortified over the blue tongue though ;) - if you're still laughing at the bugger after I finish everything else, I'll change it!

Started on the Tau part of the scene.

And how it'll sit on the base:

As an aside, I bought a cheap (£10) light box which really does work! Need to fiddle around with the blue bit, so the white background doesn't show so much, but as an initial snap I'm really quite pleased!

That scene looks brilliant, you've gotten the poses just right and the painting does the whole peice favourable justice. Excellent work, one shiny elephant sticker for you :P

I believe he is reaching for his dropped Pulse rifle. ;)

Joek, this is looking amazing. The poses are just so dynamic, and the painting is stunning. I'm really looking forward to seeing this finished. I love the whole idea of this sort of diorama.
Keep it up!
:)

Seriously folks, if all my posting is becoming wearisome, let me know. I'm finding it a really good way to motivate myself, but I'm aware that it's bordering on the obsessive at the moment!

Finally worked out the stance for the Kroot...

And this is how he works in the scene...

Not at all. In fact, I wish you'd post more WIP shots, as this is one of my favorite threads to check out.

This is turning out to be really awesome looking. I agree with most everyone else when I say you should change the BL's tongue. Black or red would look cool, but it's up to you. What about that drone a while back, will he make it to this diorama? Keep it up!

Argh! I might have to do a poll at the end of all this: 'What colour tongue should the Bloodletter have?' :P

As for the drone - I'm still thinking about him at the mo'. I've started on a dead Tau in front of the bloodletter (without his head, alas - the head is going to be strategically placed to prop up the gun that the live Tau is reaching for!).

Now, the Kroot I need some help with for the colours - it needs to be a subtle tone, linking it in with the base (so green is out, as is the colour I did one in a while ago - brown(ish). I'm kind of thinking about bone colours - almost like some Tyranids you see - with blue hair and blue sash (to give him some links with the Cadre colours), but I'm open to suggestions!

Definitely not anywhere near wearisome. I'd say that this is one of the better (and much more active) WIP threads that I've seen on ANY 40k forum. I've been meaning to start something similar solely due to this post. I believe you entirely when you say that it provides you with great motivation, and for that reason alone I should do something similar.

I don't think that the Bloodletter's tongue is at all out of place. I like the subtle color-change from dark to light. Your FW looks brilliant and I love the whole concept of the diorama. Very dramatic and well executed. Sadly, far too many great ideas never come even half this far into realization. Thanks for contributing such a neat collection of work.

I can't wait until you finish this, are you doing any work on the other aspects of your army, or is it all out for the diorama? If you feel unhappy about the tongue then don't change it too red because it might get lost in the model, take half way between red and blue and go for purple, chaos should have purple guts anyway. It's just my two cents there, but I think it'd work well.

Also is the Fire Warrior going for a pulse rifle or a pulse pistol? Again I think a pistol would be better but it's up to you.

I don't often visit the Painting Forum, but when I come across something like this I have to ask myself "What else am I missing?"

Joek, this is a terrific thread. It is in no way wearisome because your own enthusiasm and enjoyment (not to mention your modelling and painting skills) is just oozing from it.

Bloodletter's Tongue: I agree with Helios; a purplish hue would be good. Slightly more evil than blue.

This is just so cool! The stances of the models truly add to the action/suspence of the peice! Just a thought but, it would be cool, if you have more bloodletters, to add a dead BLoodletter on the ground behind the kroot to give the effect that the kroot had to fight it's way to the scene and thus making his actions more heroic ! I just happen to be a big kroot fan so maybe its just me! Can't wait for the end result!

I have to say that I like the Blood Letters blue tongue gives it some contrast. As for the colour of the Kroot I've been pondering doing some with chaos black undercoat and using some Charadon Granite or codex grey dry brushed on, might be worth giving it a try.
