Most Esteemed Majesty Aun'el'T'olku'Ko'vash'Doran'ro,

As per your request I have begun gathering together the after action reports that I, and my La'rua collected during the time we were imbedded in the N'Kau'ui'Fi'rios. I have attached a number of documents which you may find of interest. I must note that the list I have provided you with is incomplete as I am still tracking down more files that have been filed away for many tau'cyr. I must also note, that the documents may not be entirely factually correct, as we were often denied access to breifings or tactical documents, despite having the required clearance. I must note in hindsight, that Shas'el'Fi'rios'Savon'Lynu was opposed to my position and often sought to have me removed from his Cadre. Although a brilliant leader, to describe his etiquette as not of the highest order was a grave understatement.

However, due to the lack of information available, the facts preported in my recordings are sometimes proved incorrect by data that I was later able to obtain, without El'Savon's obtuse interferance. Nevertheless, I provide you with the most concise catalog of the recorded actions of the N'Kau'ui'Fi'rios for your veiwing. I will forward more records as they are uncovered.

Your Servant,
Por'vre'Elsy'eir'Kaara'va

The Battle of Eurymedon Fords

This engagement was a famous occurance that I was lucky to witness first hand. I must however report several errors in the facts of this report. The Gue'la commander is erroniusly reported as Marneus Calgar, however later reports show the Gue'la to be lead by Captain Sicarus. Also, it is reported as the 6th Company who participated in this battle, this was in fact the Second Company. Once again I must lay the blame at the door of O'Savon, who deliberately violated orders and refused me access to information.

Background:
Following the retreat from Medusa V, the Tau expeditionary force was pushed back to the planet of Naxos by an attacking force from the Ultramarines Chapter. The Neoptolomy Hive, the capitol of the planet Naxos became a major battleground. To halt continued Space Marine advances, the Tau destroyed the major bridges across the Eurymedon River, which runs through the Hive. This made the fords to the east of the city of paramount tactical importance.

The 2nd Cadre of Fi'rios was deployed to hold those fords against Space Marine attack. The 6th Company of the Ultra Marine Chapter was given the honor of taking the fords back from the Xenos. Three locations were heavily fought over during the battle. Firstly the "Statue of Guilliame", Primarch of the Ultramarines, in the Eastern Plaza, which the Ultramarines sacredly vowed to recapture from the Xenos, the "Central Ford", which was the only ford by which heavy materials and tanks could cross the river safely, and the "Sanguineous Heights", named after the statue of Sanguineous, Primarch of the Blood Angels which stood atop its summit. This overlooked the fords, and could act as a powerful firebase.

Image

Report:
The Tau were first to arrive in the area, and so moved forward to set up defenses against the oncoming onslaught. The 2nd Rifles occupied a building which allowed them to cover the "Statue of Guilliame" to the west and the "Central Ford" to the east. They were supported by the 1st carabineers and a Broadside, who bunkered down on the other side of the street. The Tau intended to use the "Statue of Guilliame" as a lure to draw the often brash Marines out into the open. On the right flank Shas'O Savon secured the "Sanguineous Heights" also backed up by a broadside Shas’vre. Shaper Bob occupied the woods on the south side of the Central ford, intending to use that safe passage as a lure for the Space Marines.

The Space Marines however advanced cautiously, occupying two buildings across from the Tau and keeping in cover rather than storming into the open killing field around the "Statue of Guilliame". Similarly Tactical Squad Three formed up in the woods north of the "Central Ford", rather than advancing directly into Tau killing fields. Dreadnought Anceintius Maximus took up position in the woods on the other side of the river from the "Sanguineous Heights" using his lascannon and missile armaments he bombarded the Tau on the hillside. The situation was likewise across the battlefield as the Marines engaged the Tau at range keeping them pinned rather than forwardly advancing, heavy crossfire occurred in the city with the Tau broadside matching the strength of Space Marine missile launchers with its twin linked railguns.

The Tau were suspicious of the Space Marine tactic. They knew that the Marines were generally inferior in ranged combat, which meant they were waiting for something. The Tau suspicions were confirmed when a unit of Terminators teleported onto the southern side of the "Sanguineous Heights". This allowed them to bring heavy weapons down on the battlesuits which were sheltering in the hill's relief. Meanwhile the Ultramarine Assault squad made a daring charge across the open ground of the eastern plaza to assault the 1st Carabineers in their occupied building.

The Terminators brought down heavy fire on Savon and his units on the Heights. Savon himself was wounded, and a krak missile killed his bodyguard. Seeing the Commander in danger, Shaper Bob abandoned his position at the ford, leading an almost suicidal charge into the Terminators. While kroot could do little to hurt the heavily armored giants, the Terminators were forced to ceasefire on the hillside and defend themselves from the kroot. On the far left flank of the Tau army the Assault Squad stormed the lower level of the 1st Carabineer’s defenses, climbing through windows and smashing through doors, using frog grenades and photon grenades both sides fought blinded in a horrible melee. The Tau however was massacred by the hand to hand combat specialists, and the assault squad regrouped to attack the broadside Shas'vre on the second floor.

The Tau seemed in a dire situation as their line was broken by the Terminators and the Assault squad, the Space Marine advance was pushing them back. However hope arrived, as reinforcements deep striked onto the battlefield. A unit of Crisis suits landed and engaged Tactical Squad Three, on the north side of the "Central Fords". The Stealth Team landed in the ford itself, and assaulted Tactical Squad Two, driving it from its occupied building with heavy fire from five burst cannons.

With the arrival of reinforcements the Tau took up the Counter attack. Anceintius Maximus battled with Broadside Shas'vre Elan'Ka in a one on one battle of heavy weaponry. On the other side of the battlefield, the other broadside held off the Assault squad from gaining control of the building. However in classic Space Marine style the Ultramarines reformed and attacked again. Tactical Squad Three overwhelmed the assaulting Crisis Team. Shaper Bob's kroot were finally routed by the Terminators, despite having killed two of their number, this allowed the Terminators to attack up the hillside in a bid to wrest the "Sanguineous Heights" from the Tau. Tactical Squad Three now made a desperate bid to cross the river and link up with the Terminators battling on the Heights.

The battle now reached its final moments, as the Stealth team used the last of it fuel to jump to the south side of the river, and rain burst fire down on the horribly exposed Tactical Squad Three as it attempted to ford the river. The Space Marines were caught defenseless and were massacred. The 2nd Rifles advanced to secure the "Central ford", but with them gone and the Broadside tied up in hand to hand, Tactical Squad One was able to advance unimpeded and secure the "Statue of Guilliame". On the "Sanguineous Heights" Shas'O Savon took the Terminators head on, managing to kill one with a blast of his plasma rifle.

When the Stealth Team arrived on the hills summit instead of the Tactical Squad Reinforcement the Terminators had expected, the Space Marines accepted defeat. Despite securing Guilliame's statue and most of the city. With the Ford and the Heights securely controlled by the Tau, the Space Marines knew their attack had failed. Less than half of the assault force survived to regroup on the north side of the river.

Analysis:
The Space Marine Assault was well planned and avoided the obvious Tau kill zones. Using blitzkrieg methods they broke the Tau line and made good advances. However with the Arrival of Tau reinforcements, the Tau were able to reform their line and neutralize the Terminators and the assault squad. Due to the arrival of the Stealth team, assaults across the fords were turned into charnel houses of dead marines.

The Battle of St Sebastian Abbey

This is yet another battle that O'Savon commanded, and my la'rua were able to record. By this point I still had not recieved access to information on the Naxos Campaign. I was still erroniusly working on the assumption that the Geu'la commander was Marneus Calgar and the Company fielded was the 5th. Indeed, it appears that only a handful of Ultramarines were deployed this day, and the Majority of the battle was fought by the Sable Sword's Chapter. Their commander is unknown.

Background
Following the fifth company’s failure to capture the fords of the Eurymedon River, east of Neoptolomy Hive, the battle took on a stalemate, with the space marines unable to gain a beachhead on the opposite shore. Frustrated with the lack of advance in this sector Marneus Calgar, Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, took personal command. Up until now the main Tau army had been elusive, using the fords and any other crossings as lures for imperial forces. The imperial high command had learned the hard way that any attack on these areas was folly.

Calgar intended to play the Tau at their own game. He would use himself as the lure, knowing the Tau could not resist the chance to assassinate the high commander of the Ultramarines. He would purposely leak information to the Tau that he was going off on a salvage mission, with just a small bodyguard to the ruins of the St. Sebastian Abbey some 50 miles to the east of the Hive city. There he would trap the Tau army between heavy defenses and reinforcements, cutting them to pieces and winning a decisive victory.

The Tau fell for it.

Battlefield Description
The Abbey of St. Sebastian lies on a large bend in the Eurymedon River, approx. 50 miles east of the Hive city Neoptolomy. The Abbey itself is broken ruin, its roof having fallen in are many years of disuse. There is a large breach in its outer wall that faces east. The doors of the south gate have long rotted, the chapel of sanctity stands on the south wall, a shadow of its former glory, but in a much better state than the rest of the building. Across the river lies a large hilly wood, with an old abandoned bunker which has been in disuse since before the planet was under the ruler-ship of the Tau Empire.

Image

Deployment
The space marines deployed first since they where the first to arrive. Calgar immediately set up his HQ in the Chapel of Sanctity. Captain Marius deployed with TS1 (Tactical Squad One) at the south gate. TS2 deployed in the breach, with TS2 in reserve. Dreadnought Ancientius Extremetus remained with the rest of the 5th Company in reserve.

The Tau cautiously approached through the wood. The First Carabineers deployed on the far left flank of the Tau army, among woods directly across from the South Gate. Shaper bob’s kroot formed up in the woods with a clear line of sight to the Breach, they were supported by a Broadside. On the far right flank of the army the 2nd Carabineers and the 2nd rifles formed up to advance on the eastern walls of the Abbey. Aun’Kunas remained behind the tree line with the rest of the Cadre. Shas’O Savon waited with a Rapid deployment cadre so as to reinforce when necessary.

Report
Phase 1:
Tau presence was first sited some 45 minutes after Calgar’s arrival. The Ultramarines were unable to secure the outer defenses or the all important bunker before their arrival so they would have to rely strictly on the crumbling walls of the Abbey for cover. The Tau wasted no time and Captain Marius found himself engaged in a heavy firefight at the South Gate. Tau forces where firing from the shelter of a wooded hill on the other side of the river.

Across the battlefield Tau engaged at range. Casualties were taken across the defenses, Tau snipers captured the Bunker, and from their rained down fire on the open breach. TS2 took heavy casualties as the high powered rail-rifle rounds punched through their power armor, like paper. Calgar immediately withdrew them, realizing the Tau had brought up firepower that at the moment he could not compete with.

The two forces swapped fire, as the Ultramarines crouched behind the ruined walls of the abbey, the Tau advanced pouring fire against the defences. A large force of Tau made an attempt to cross the river on the far left of the Imperial flank, out in the open the Ultramarines avenged their fallen brothers by wiping out an entire unit of Carabineers while they negotiated the river. After this setback the Tau advance halted and they held their ground on the river banks sending and inordinate amount of fire down on the abbey.

Phase 2:
With the Space Marines sufficiently pinned down, Aun’Kunas gave the order. The Tau had planned ahead for the attack, and gun drones had been planted in the Abbey itself, these machines now leapt to life behind the Space Marine lines. This immediately caused havoc as Captain Marius found himself attacked from behind. As Calgar ordered troops back from the walls to deal with this threat, the Tau prepared their final assault on the now weakly defended walls.

Image
The Gun drones leap to life behind Captain Marius and his Men.

Heavily Outnumbered, attacked from the front and infiltrated from behind, the Ultramarines looked on the verge of being overrun. But Calgar was so not easily beaten; he too had a trick up his sleeve. Voxing up to his flagship high above the planet, Calgar called for rapid reinforcement. A lone Thunder-hawk swooped from the sky Veteran Sergeant Varus and his assault squad leapt from on high and landed behind Tau lines, appearing from nowhere the 5th company’s terminator squad teleported behind the Tau attacking the South gate. Now the attackers had been outflanked.

Phase 3:
Although the Tau advance was halted slightly by the appearance of a new enemy, the Ultramarine deployment had gone horribly wrong. Varus’ Assault squad had landed way off course deep in the woods, and far from the battle. As soon as the Terminators arrived, Shas’O Savon deployed from his manta personally reinforcing the troops at the South Gate. So now the Terminators would have to face the powerful weapons equipped on the Tau XV8 Crisis Battlesuits.

Image
Varus and his Assault squad land way off course.

The Tau continued their advance, but were now looking over their shoulder for the arrival of Varus’ Assault Squad, they remembered bitterly the horrid casualties that unit could inflict on their weaker troops. On the left flank however the attack had stalled entirely the Gun drones were being wiped out without sufficient support. While O’Savon swapped heavy fire with the Terminators behind his lines, both he and his bodyguard took wounds and it looked that they would be overwhelmed by their almost invulnerable foe.
It was O’Savon who called for reinforcements once more on the beleaguered left flank. Descending from the manta arrived Shas’vre Kais’ Crisis team, they too opened fire with powerful melta and plasma weapons helping to bring down more of the Terminators. Although caught in a terrible crossfire, the Terminators bravely charged the Shas’O bringing their mighty power weapons to bear on battlesuit armor.

However the Tau also experienced an unfortunate drop. The Cadre’s stealth Team which has been sent to reinforce the Drones, now landed inside the Abbey’s walls. However they had intended to land in support of the Drones. Instead the landed on the other side of the Abbey, into the chapel of sanctity, right into Marneus Calgar’s command centre. Calgar immediately leapt at the new foe. It was not a fight but a massacre, Calgar waded into the rain of pulse fire that in the last battle had wiped out many brave battle brothers. He resurfaced unscathed and the Gauntlets of Ultramar tasted the blood of the Xeno Tau. Calgar wreaked his terrible wrath on the Xenos. That they stood and fought this hero of the Imperium is a testament to their character and bravery, but nonetheless Calgar cut them down to a man, even the marker drone that had made the drop with them.

Phase 4:
With the Stealth Team slaughtered, Calgar received pleas from the Terminators on the other side of the river. They had been surrounded and would not last long. Calgar fearful for his battle brothers and immediately ordered Marius to sally forth across the river and support the terminator team.

Image
The Terminator squad teleports behind enemy lines, only to be surrounded and cut down.

However it was already too late. The last of the Terminators were cut down by O’Savon and his bodyguard. Under heavy fire, Marius attempted to cross the river, if not just to retrieve the bodies of his men. His command squad suffered under the fire, with TS1 still engaging the Gun Drones behind the lines, Marius had no cover fire. Calgar watched in horror as he saw Marius and his mean struggle through the river. The river, at this point, was deep at this point and the current was strong. Marius was wounded time and time again; unable to cross the river and rescue his brothers he cried in defiance, it was here that Captain Marius fell his entire command squad killed trying to cross the river. Calgar felt keenly his loss, but now that the Tau had dealt with the enemy behind them. The Final assault began.

With Varus’ Assault Squad no-where in sight, Marius dead and tactical squad two almost totally out of action, The ultramarines were even more outnumbered, and outgunned than before their reinforcements had arrived.

Phase 5:
But even as the men began to despair a mighty shape emerged from the woods to the west. A wild cheer went up amongst the ragged defenders as Dreadnought Ancientius Extremetus and Assault Terminator Sargeant Verinus arrived to bolster the defenses.

Ancientius Extremetus opened fire with his lascannon on the advancing Tau; a mighty Broadside took a direct hit, its smoking husk collapsing with a groan into the river. But Extremetus and Verinus were not the only allies to arrive. With a high pitched whine, Varus attacked the Tau rear engaging Tau on the far right flank of the Tau army.

Image
Dreadnought Ancientius Extremetus and Verinus’ Terminator Assault Squad, hasten to the front lines.

The Tau did not give the Marines the chance to regroup however. They attacked immediately hoping to destabilize the Space Marines. With impressive cover fire, Shaper Bob and his warband swept into the breach, yelping happily at the chance to fight at last. With a roar Sergeant Verinus met them bayonet to power claw, and the carnage of the breach began.

At the south gate however, the Tau had amassed 5 battlesuits, armed with the most powerful weapon available to their empire, TS1 stood their ground at the gate, but against such high powered weaponry courage was no match alone. They were totally overrun and killed. Calgar knew the left south wall was lost, with Kroot pouring into the breach, it was only a matter of time before they were overwhelmed. The Crisis suits would outflank the defenders and cut them down with plasma and melta fire. In a great feat of Courage, Marneus Calgar leapt forward to engage 5 Crisis suits on his own. These machines had killed the Terminator squad, cut down Marius and slaughtered the brave men of the 5th Company. Their Chapter Master would have his vengeance.

Image
Verinus moves to meet Shaper Bob in the instances before a bitter clash for the east wall.

All across the walls of the Abbey there was brutal hand to hand combat as the Tau stormed the defenses. At the south wall, Calgar fought Three Battle suits at once. Bleeding from many wounds he soldiered on in desperation to hold off the inevitable. On the Right flank of the Tau army, Sergeant Varus and his assault squad fought desperately to cut their way through the Tau lines and save their beleaguered brothers. At the breach Verinus fought like a tiger, cutting down kroot left and right, but he was being overwhelmed, two of five man squad where already dead, and the ethereal Aun’Kunas had charged in with his bodyguard, he was an incredible warrior spinning his honor-blade in elegant motions, the blade nearly invisible as it cut through Terminator armor.

Image
Varus and battered squad desperately cut down a Tau squad in desperation to reach the abbey before its too late.

It looked like despite all that Calgar had planned for; the 5th Company would be overwhelmed and cut down. At this bitter moment, as it looked like the Tau might gain the breach the remnants of Tactical Squad Two charged into the swirling melee. Their timing was perfect and the Tau were pushed back, Verinus found himself mounting the rubble of breach as the Ethereal called for a retreat. He watched in amazement as the Tau army pulled back across the river, retreating in good form, some units halting to rain fire back on the space marines.

Image
The High-Water mark at the breach

At the South Gate, Calgar sat on the crushed carcasses of two crisis suits. The enemy had suddenly pulled back at the very moment when they might have finished him off. He watched as they jumped back over the river, still red with the blood of Marius and his command squad.

All across the front the Tau pulled back from the walls, bloodied and battered they had decided that to win here would cost them too many good troops. In classic Tau style they pulled back in good order, melting back into the woods. The Ultramarines had held the St. Sebastian Abbey, though it had cost them dear.

Conclusion
The battle around the Abbey of St. Sebastian was a brutal affair, the most slaughtering battle of the campaign on both sides. What made the battle so tragic was that it was completely inconsequential. In fact it is more apt to say that neither side won the battle. If the Tau’s objective was to kill Calgar they failed, despite all they threw at him. Similarly if the Ultramarines objective was to annihilate the Tau army they too failed, the Tau lost barely half their force, indeed the Ultramarines probably received worse casualties.

In conclusion Calgar greatly underestimated the Xenos firepower, their organization, and more worryingly their numbers. The fact that he was saved from disaster was a mere miracle. On the Tau side some of their best forces where thrown away on such a direct assault. Only because of the skill and courage of Shaper Bob did the breach not turn into a complete massacre, bad planning and landings also cost the Tau their gun drones, and the highly proficient stealth team. Also several teams of fire warriors had little effect on the battle as they were badly deployed.

Man of the Match
orgionally we decided that Marneus Calgar won this award, but we decided that he was a special character and was expected to go above and beyond the call of duty.

Image

therefore it was decided Terminator Sargeant Verinus and his Terminator Assault Squad should win the award because they held the Tau back at the breach for two turns, allowing the Space Marines to hold the Abbey and therefore win the game.

Vamnos Excursion

This is the first of two reports that I have attached which pertain to the Vam'nos Campaign in the Dal'yth Sept. The engagements against the Mon'tau here were bloody and confused but I believe that many of my facts here are correct. However the only failing I must report is the wrong presentation of Se'hen'ka's rank. Records show he had not yet attained command by this point, and so he must still have been a Shas'vre. He was, in hindsight, far more polite than his commanding officer, and it was a pleasure to work for him after El'Savon's untimely demise.

Por'vre'Elsy'eir'Kaara'va

Setting up the Battle:

Step 1: Decide points limit and choose forces.

Points limit = 500pts

Tau Empire –
2nd Cadre Fi’rios, Light infantry Detachment.

Image

Shas’el Se’hen’ka
- Plasma Rifle
- Burst Cannon
- Shield Generator
- Multi Tracker

Stealth Team Alpha
- 3 x Shas’ui
- 3 x Targeting Array
- Fusion Blaster

1st Rifles
- Shas’ui
- 5 x Shas’la (Pulse Rifles)
- Marker light
- Multi Tracker

2nd Rifles
- Shas’ui
- 5 x Shas’la (Pulse Rifles)
- Marker light
- Multi Tracker

Shaper Bob’s Kroot Kindred
- Shaper
- 11 x Kroot

Total = 500pts

Chaos Space Marines –
Black Legion, Sons of Alcarin Warband.

Image

Chaos Lord Alcarin
- Mark of Tzeentch
- Plasma Pistol
- Daemon weapon
- Daemonic Steed

Ajax’s Warband
- Aspiring Champion
- 4 x Chaos Space Marines

Corax’s Warband
- Aspiring Champion
- 4 x Chaos Space Marines

Kale’s warband
- Skull Champion
- 4 Korne Berzerkers

Total = 500pts

Step 2: Set up Battlefield and decide on terrain rules

Image

Note: Picture is facing north for direction purposes e.g. the hillside in the north-west corner.

- Highways count as roads except for the underneath part which is counted as ruins, provides 4+ cover save and is difficult terrain.
- River, including the banks, is difficult terrain.
- Quarry walls are Impassible terrain but the actual quarry floor is not.
- the hedgerow counts as woods, and henceforth has a 4+ instead of 5+, and can be seen over (despite its height in reality).

Step 3: Decide on Mission Type

we rolled a dice on the chart and rolled a 5, 5 = Annihilation

Step 4: Choose Deployment Type

we rolled another dice on the deployment chart and rolled a 2, 2 = Pitched Battle

we then rolled to see who goes first. I rolled a 6 and my opponent rolled 5. I decided to deploy on the west side board edge, and decided to go first.

Battle Report:

10:00 am, Tau Deployment.

Image

Since the Tau arrived first it was easy for them to seize the high ground. The 1st rifles Fire warrior team deployed on the hilltop at the edge of the North/South highway. To their immediate right deployed Shas'el Se'hen'var in his crisis battle suit. To the south of the hill, the 2nd rifles deployed on a small knoll tainted by the marks of Chaos. Shaper Bob and his kroot kindred infiltrated across the river, while the stealth suits were held in deep strike reserve.

10:30 am, Chaos Deployment.

Image

Lord Alcarin's forces were later to arrive, deploying on the eastern bank of the river. Ajax's forces deployed in the hedgrows to the north readying to provide cover fire for Kale's Bersekers who had forged ahead and were ready to try and ford the river. To the south of the East/West highway, Lord Alcarin himself deployed beside Corax's space marines.

10: 45 am, Infiltrate and Seize the Initiative

The Kroot are spotted having infiltrated into the woods on the riverbank to the south.

The Chaos forces attempt to seize the initiative... rolls 5... fails.

11:00 am, Tau turn 1

Image
Image

The first rifles, atop the hill, now made a difficult terrain test to enter the ruins under Highway North/South, rolling a 4 they advanced into the ruins. The Shas'el used his jet pack to jump down the quarry walls and land in the quarry, making him capable of firing on both the north and south sides of the battlefield and the second rifles advanced over the chaos ground the edge of the river bank in case they needed to reinforce either the Shas'el or the kroot.

the shooting phase was rather successful for the Tau as The kroot opened fire, single shot, on Corax's warband. with 12 shots, they killed two space marines. The Shas'el then opened fire, single shot, with his plasma rifle, successfully killing a korne berserker from Kale's warband at 20" away.

the Tau made no assault moves.

11:30 am Chaos Turn 1

Image
closeup: Alcarin Vs 11 kroot, an equal fight?

Kale's berserker's forded the river with a 4 on their difficult terrain test. Corax's space marines advanced to within 12" of the Kroot. Lord Alcarin, moved his full 12" towards the Kroot since his disc of Tzeentch makes him jump infantry.

Corax and his two surviving space marines opened fire, rapid fire, on the Kroot in the woods, however with the Kroot's 4+ cover save, they only managed to kill one. Lord Alcarin used his Deathscreamer daemon sword and fired a blast at the Kroot but made no kills. The Korne berserkers run 6" up the hillside, attempting to close on the hilltop before the Tau can bring their deadly firepower to bear.

In the Assualt phase Alcarin charged into the Kroot, he rolled a 3 for charging into difficult terrain, just allowing him to make contact with the Kroot. His frag grenades allowed him to fight at his normal initiative 5, so he attacked first. with a base of 3 attacks, +1 attack for his disc of Tzeentch, +1 attack for charging in, Alcarin rolled 6 for his Daemon weapon attacks, so he had a total of 11 attaks in the combat. With the new close combat weapon rules, all Alcarin's attacks benefit from the Daemon weapon, meaning all his attacks ignore armor saves (not that the Kroot have any). Alcarin makes 8 wounds which ignore armor saves so 8 kroot are killed.

The kroot successfully fight back and their shaper manages to score a wound on Alcarin. The Kroot pass their morale test and amazingly hold their ground.

12:00 pm Tau turn 2

Tau roll for the deep striking reserve, rolls 6, Stealth team arrive. Stealth team land on east/west roadway, but scatter 10" to the north.

Note: there are meant to be two black crosses over the Berserkers, explaining their disappearance in this pic, i don't know how i missed that.

with the Stealth Team landing on the far side of the river, the 1st rifles advance to the edge of the North/South highway, allowing them to fire on the open slope at the Korne berserkers. The Shas'el moves closer to the river to get a clear shot on the berserkers too.

The Berserkers are caught in the open and the Tau fire on them. The Shas'el opens fire with his plasma rifle and burst cannon. in an attempt to get an invulnerable cover save the berserkers went to ground. the Shas'el still took one kill however. The 1st rifles shas'ui used his markerlight on the berserkers, but missed, the rifles then fired rapid fire, 12 shots on the berserkers killing another. Although the stealth team added the fire of a fusion blaster and 2 burst cannons, they made no further kills.

in the assault phase, Alcarin easily finished off the kroot with 4 base attacks and 4 attacks from his daemon weapon, before they even had the chance to fight back. Alcarin consolidated 5" towards the river.

12:30 pm, Chaos Turn 2

Image
Closeup: the leaders meet in a one on one battle in the center of the battle.

With the Korne berserkers under heavy fire and pinned down, the forces of Ajax make their move and move out of the hedgerows to engage the Stealth Team. Corax's marines advance into the woods, now filled with the chard corpses of the kroot while Alcarin leaps across the river to do battle with the Tau Shas'el.

The chaos forces do not waste ammunition and charge immediately Ajax's forces attacking the Stealth suits, killing two before they could even fight back. The stealth suit Shas'vre remains but scores no wounds on his opponents.

Alcarin attacks the Shas'el with 10 attacks and wounds the Shas'el 3 times, despite the shas'els shield generator. The Shas'el then fails to wound Alcarin, and losses the combat, he fails his leadership with double 6s (:() but survives Alcarin's attempt to sweeping advance, moving back 8" towards the west board edge.

Alcarin consolidates 4" towards the 2nd rifles.

1:00 pm, Tau Turn 3

The Shas'el rolls 2d6 to regroup and rolls a 1 and 2, succesfully passing his leadership test to reform.

Image
with the Stealth suits in combat, the Tau make no moves.

the 2nd rifles, still positioned on the knoll open fire. the Shas'ui uses his markerlight to increase the balistic skill of those shooting at Alcarin, then using his multitracker he fires his pulse rifle, along with those of his squad, at the chaos lord. 12 shots, 7 hits, 6 wounds, Alcarin saves all but one. He has only 1 wound left.

The Shas'el then joins the rifle team with his burst cannon and Plasma rifle on rapid fire. The shas'el scores 3 wounds in total. Alcarin uses his 4+ invulnerable save but fails one, losing the last of his wounds. Alcarin is killed.

To the north, the 1st rifles continue pouring fire onto the Berserkers. their marker light shot fails but with 12 shots they score 5 wounds. thanks to an abysmal roll, of ones and twos, the berserkers are all slain.

all is not lost however, despite a rather brutal turn for the chaos forces, Ajax's squad conquers in the assault phase killing the stealth Shas'vre before he can fight back. they consolidate 6" into the river.

1:30pm, Chaos Turn 3

Image

Trying to salvage something from what is beginning to look like another stinging defeat. The space marines went on the attack once more. Corax's troops moved further into the woods to get a clear shot on the 2nd rifles, while Ajax's troops raced up the hillside, ignoring the chance to shoot the entrenched Tau and ran 6" forward in the shooting phase.

Corax's forces opened fire with their bolters, but were ineffective against the Tau.

2:00pm, Tau Turn 4

Image
Note: once again i have missed something, there should be a blue movement line to show that the Shas'el moved from the hill slope to the quarry floor.

The Tau now found themselves defending on the defensive once more. The shas'el jumped into the quarry floor, to once again get a shot on troops assaulting up the east/west slope.

The rest of the Tau held thier positions and opened fire. both markerlights missed their respective targets, but 12 shots from the 2nd rifles annihilated Corax's unit, sheltering in the Trees. Ajax refused the Temptation to go to ground and instead sacrificed 2 marines to the shas'el's plasma rifle for a chance to engage the 1st rifles in hand to hand, next turn.

The shas'el jumped back up the quarry walls in the assualt phase.

2:30pm, Chaos Turn 4

Image

With Ajax and his 2 followers the Last chaos hope for victory, they moved further up the hill and the champion opened fire with his bolt pistol, taking no kills. they charged home using their frag grenades to allow them to fight at proper initiative, while the Tau's photon grenades took away their charging attack. The chaos forces managed to down a Tau warrior, but lost one of their own number in turn, leaving the combat a draw.

Image
The high water mark: the Tau of the 1st rifles defiantly hold their ground against the Chaos space Marines.

3:00pm, Tau Turn 5

Image

The 5th Tau turn was rather unsuccessful, with the 2nd rifles on the otherside of the battlefield they were unimportant, while the Shas'el was too far away to join the fight, he arrived behind the Tau line, prepared to catch the Chaos space marines in a hail of fire if they somehow won the combat.

needless to say, they did. The aspiring champion managed to cut down another Tau warrior and recieved no wounds in return. The Tau lost the combat and failed their morale test. Unfortunately the Space Marines rolled a 6 in the sweeping advance, allowing to route and slaughter the remains of the 1st rifles.

In the wake of the massacre the Chaos troops consolidated 3".

3:30pm, Chaos Turn 5

Image

The chaos troops now tried to go for the gold, knowing they could score a victory if they killed the Shas'el. rolling a 6 on their difficult terrain test they moved outside the North/south highway and the champion opened fire on the Shas'el with his bolt pistol, he missed. The two chaos marines then charged into combat with the Shas'el but it was ineffective as neither side, scored any wounds.

The Game ends

at the end of turn 5 we rolled to see if another turn would occur and provide us with a winner, but on the roll of a 2 the game ended.

The Chaos forces had successfully killed 3 Tau units, and the Tau had killed 3 Chaos units. The battle was a draw, with the moral victory of more victory points going to the Tau.

Image

The anti-climatic ending, the Shas'el fights two chaos space marines to win the battle onto the victory, but neither score any wounds so the game ends as a miserable draw.

Man of the Match

Image

we decided that although Alcarin nearly singlehandedly won the battle by turn 3, he was a hero with a daemon weapon and was henceforth expected to achieve impressive feats, the same went for the Shas'el who played a big part in holding the chaos advance.

we finally went with the Aspiring champion of Ajax's warband, since he lead his troops to defeat the stealth team, then storm up the hill where even the berserkers of Korne had failed. Then proceeded to change the tide of battle by overrunning a unit twice their number. Finally managing to end the battle in a draw, the victory just slipping through their fingers. Truly he was a favored of the gods.

[hr]

phew, that was a bit long perhaps, but it was a good battle, despite the slightly anticlimatic ending, perhaps in hindsight should have ignored the end of the game and played on, perhaps chaos could have won, but i think that by that point the 2nd rifles would have moved up and blown the victorious marines to smithereens, so perhaps not.

N'Kau'ui vs Black Legion

Malacar crushed a Tau skull underfoot as he surveyed the area. The hilly ground here would serve his troops well, smoke from the burning outpost would draw the Tau to battle here, and the Sorceror's thirst for blood was far from quenched. Screams were violently silenced as the berzerkers finished off their victims, cries of praise to the blood god filled the air. The whine of engines drew Malacar's attention, on the hills opposite Tau troops were disembarking from an Orca transport. The rapid response troops had arrived, it was time for battle.

Situation at the end of turn 1
Image
Malacar ducked his head as the plasma fire rained down around his position. two of his men fell, even the power of Nurgle had not saved them. The return fire was pitiful, and a glance to the Berzerkers position filled him with anger, although the 3rd hill had been secured the berzerkers had taken heavy losses. It appeared he had greatly under estimated his opponent's firepower.

Kroot fight back, 3 hits, 2 wounds, 2 saves
kroot lose combat, moral check = passed

Situation at then end of turn 2
Image
Malacar, seeing the battle hanging in the balance, leapt from behind cover. Summouning the power of chaos to him unleashed doombolts upon the commander. however they seemed to have little effect. he dodged the return fire, and his heart rose as reinforcements arrived, more nurgle marines had appeared. all was not lost. With a cry of "blood for the blood god!" the surviving berzerkers fell upon their enemy, hacking them to peices immediately steaming onto into another brutal melee with more of the Xeno filth. Malacar grinned in triumph, the tide had turned.

Chaos Turn 3:

- Broadside opens fire with railgun on Chaos Sorceror, hits, wounds, no save, sorceror is killed

Situation at the end of turn 3
Image
Malacar charged forward towards his foe, before his enemy could even react he had hurled himself upon the battlesuit, bringing his force weapon smashing down on the xeno's head. the helmet crumpled under the blow, and with a burst of psychic power, Malacar shattered the mind of the pilot. A chorus of bloody screams came from the berzerkers as they hacked down yet more foes. Now the Tau were on the run, most of their troops slaughtered or fleeing. However Malacar had little time to rejoice, Tau reinforcement's arrived in the form of another battlesuit, and now the Tau were forcusing thier fire on him! two shots imbedded themselves in his chest, and the sorceror struggled to breath. before he even had a chance to recover, the new battlesuit fired its railguns. Malacar felt his body seperate appart, and as he lay broken on the ground, he realised this fight was far from over.

situation at the end of turn 4
Image
Skalax lead his troops on, Grandfather nurgle had delivered them through the fight unscathed so far, but with Malacar down, the other plague commander dead, and the Berzerkers lost in a mindless frenzy, Skalax found himself in command. either the Space marines could withdraw and hold the highground, or they could keep on their advance against the Tau defensive position. either way would lead them to be under heavy fire. Skalax quickly made his decision. to retreat was to be picked off from range, they had to attack. "Charge Brothers! Take the fight to them!" Skalax hefted his chainsword and charged forward into the firestorm.

Chaos Turn 5:
Movement Phase -
- All chaos troops advance towards the Tau
Shooting Phase -
- Chaos won't shoot this turn

Berzerker strikes first, 3 hits, 1 wound, saved
Broadside strikes back, 1 hit, no wounds
combat is a tie

roll to see if the game continues = 6, game continues

Situation at the end of Turn 5
Image
Several marines went down, but the charge continued. Plasma blasts raced past Skalax as he charged towards the sandbags, the Tau were well dug in here, but if there was won force in the galaxy that could take a defensive position it was Space Marines. Skalax climbed the sandbag wall, even as 2 of his men fell back, hit point blank by the powere weapons of the Tau. Skalax avenged them with his chainsword. hacking enemies apart, but they held firm. out of the corner of his eye Skalax saw the Skull Champion face the new battlesuit one on one. through he was far more skilled in close combat, the berzerker was struggling to cut through the thick armour. The battle was reaching it's final momments.

Chaos Turn 6:
Movement Phase -
- no movement possible
Shooting Phase -
- no shooting possible
Assualt Phase -
- Nurgle Marines vs Firewarriors
CSM strike first, 2 hits, 1 wound, no save, 1 kill
Tau strike back, no hits,
Tau lose the combat, morale check = success

Broadside strikes back, 1 hit, 1 wound, saved
Broadside losses the combat, morale check = failure, Sweeping Advance = success, broadside killed
Skull champion consildates 5"

roll to see if game continues = 2, game ends

Situation at the end of Turn 6
Image
The Tau's point blank fire over the parapet was cutting down more and more marines, doubt began to creep into Skalax's mind that the attack would succede. he threw aside his doubt with a great roar however and rallied his men with the cry "we are returned!", as if by magic the mood changed and the Marines roared in defiance throwing themselves back against the defenses. A great cry rose up when the berserker finally defeated his mighty foe. Bringing the suit to its knees with a thrust from his chainsword that cut into the cockpit and ended his opponent. With the fall of the broadside the Tau morale broke, and they fled like children. the Massacre began.

Aftermath:
Skalax heaped up yet another Tau body onto the pile. Solemly the fallen marine's gene-seed was harvested, while others, badly wounded where carried to the extraction point. The skirmish that day had taught the Tau the strength of their enemies, and would inspire fear in the world's population. but Skalax knew that once again the Chaos forces had been brutally reminded of the firepower of their enemies. It was not something they should forget.

Outcome: Tau objectives held = 0, Chaos Objectives held = 0, Draw
Moral Victory: Chaos, with 461 victory points

Man of the Match:
Korne Berserker, Skull Champion

Re: Battles of the N'Kau'ui'Fi'rios

The Retaking of Piotius City

I recently uncovered this report, which I document as about halfway through the Naxos Campaign. It was the second major battle between Shas'o'Savon's forces and the newly arrived Imperial Guard forces under Lord General Lochrig. It was However the first battle that the N'Kau'ui actually took part in, as Savon himself took personal command. It is perhaps one of the more overlooked battles of the Cadre's career, in my opinion particularly because Savon's stubbornness and refusal to retreat nearly cost the Empire the battle and committed far too many Tau to their deaths.

Shas'vre'Elsy'eir'Kaara'va

Introduction:
It is the year 999.M41, The Planet of Naxos is yet another battleground between the Tau Empire and the Imperium of Man. In response to the world's fall, Lord General Lochrig and the 1082nd Army are dispatched to reclaim the planet. One of his key objectives is the Cathedral of Piotius City, which is perhaps the most sacred and beautiful dedications to the God-Emperor's divinity in the Sector. Lochrig has declared the city must be taken no matter what the cost, and has assigned Colonel Campbell of the 125th Blackreach to the task. The 125th are not alone however, the 82nd Vendoland Armoured and a veteran Company of the 1011th Valhallan Ice Warriors have been attached to their forces.

Shas'o'Savon, Commander of the Tau Fire Caste of Naxos has personally taken command of the defence of Piotius City. He has no wish to fight for the cathedral, instead he sees the Building as a lure for the Imperial army. The narrow streets and ruins of the city suit O'Savon's Kauyon tactics of lures and ambushes. After 2 days of bombardment and bombing, which nearly flattened the city (notably the Tau had captured it intact barely months before), Campbell began his assault. His first target was the East-West Highway which ran right through the city. It was the cities lifeline and the most strategically vital position in the whole city.

Armies:

Tau = N'Kau'ui Fi'rios - Commanded by Majonga (Shas'o'Savon)
HQ - 1 x Shas'O, 1 x Shas'el
Elites - 6 x Stealth suits, 3 x Crisis suits

Heavy Support - 1 x Hammerhead, 1 x Broadside

Imperial Guard = 1082nd Army - Commanded by Lowraj (Lord General Lochrig)
HQ - Commissar Yarrick (Commissar Jugen)
Elites - 3 x Ogryns, 5 x Ratlings,
Troops - 5 x Command Squad, 10 x Guardsmen (Alpha Squad),10 x Guardsmen (Bravo Squad), 3 x Heavy Weapons, 10 x Veterans in Chimera (Valhallans)
Fast Attack - 2 x Sentinels
Heavy Support - 1 x Leman Russ (Leman Russ 1), 1 x Leman Russ (Leman Russ 2), 1 x Basilisk.

Game:
Size - 1500pts
Deployment - Pitched Battle Deployment
Mission - Annihilation
Battleground - Cityscape bisected by ruined highways and public parks
Image
Picture looks West along the main highway through Piotius Hive.
Either side of the highway are Industrial districts bordered by public parks to the East and West.
Rubble around buildings and under highways are difficult terrain.

Pre-Battle Report:

Deployment:
The Tau were first on the scene and in typical Kauyon, they checked their deployment and awaited the arrival of the Imperial advance. Imperial attempts to increase the speed of their advance and seize the initiate were unsuccessful.

Imperial Guard Deployment:
The Imperial Guard Deployed along the North Board Edge, On their Western Flank, Commissar Jugen deployed with the unit of Ogryns in the most Westerly factory Ruin. Alongside them deployed Alpha Squad and Behind sat the Basilisk. East of the Factory, the Platoon Command Squad deployed in the redoubt supported by Leman Russ 1. In the Central Administratum, Bravo Squad deployed among the ruins. To the immediate East among the sandbag emplacements deployed Leman Russ 2, and the Sentinels. On the Furthest East Flank, around the command bunker the heavy weapons team dug in. in-front of them, deployed the Valhallans in the Chimera. The Ratlings Infiltrated.

The Imperial Lines.

Tau Deployment:
The Tau deployed second. The Shas'O set up on the far East among the Woods of the East Park. In the Office Block along from him deployed Fire Warrior Team 2. In the Street between the Office Block and the Southern Factory, the Broadside and Crisis Suit teams deployed. Next to them, Fire Warrior Team 1 occupied the Southern Factory. On the far western flank, beyond the hedge, the Shas'el and Hammerhead deployed among the craters. The Kroot Infiltrated and the Stealth Suits outflanked.

The Tau East Flank.

Infiltrators:
The Imperial Guard Infiltrated their Ratlings into the warehouse at the edge of the park. The Tau infiltrated two squads of Kroot. One Set up in the woods ahead of the Shas'O, the other behind the Collapsed Section of Highway infront of the Hammerhead and Shas'El.

The Ratlings Infiltrate.

Turn One:

Imperial Guard Turn One:
The Imperial Guard began the battle with a general advance, Bravo team moved up onto the upper levels of the Administratum. Commissar Jugen, the Orgyns and Alpha team moved to clear the Westerly Factory. The Veterans in their chimera moved forward and opened fire on kroot squad one who had infiltrated into the East Park. The Kroot survived unscathed. The Imperial guard concentrated their fire on the Crisis Suits and the Broadsides. The Broadside Lost their marker drone and the Crisis Suits lost 2 wounds from the ratlings sniper fire. Kroot Squad Two lost 2 of their number to fire from Leman Russ 1 and the Command Squad's fire. Finally the Broadside was cut down by a hit from Leman Russ 2's Battlecannon.
Image
The Imperial West Flank Advances and Fires on Kroot Squad Two

Tau Turn One
The Tau returned fire almost immediately. The Hammerhead advanced and fired a sub-munition round into the Imperial advance at the Westerly Factory. The Shot Scattered and took 2 wounds of the Ogryns. The Shas'El moves up alongside them and managed to kill a guardsman from Bravo Squad. Kroot Squad one, move through the trees and rapid fired the ratlings with their kroot rifles. Three were killed and the rest fell-back off the board. First Kill Point to the Tau. Kroot Squad Two, swarmed over the ruined highway and charged Alpha Squad, Cutting them to pieces and consolidating 2". The Crisis suits advanced and took cover under the Highway. The Shas'El and Shas'O both advanced to support the Kroot Squads.
Image
Kroot Squad Two Consolidates into the Westerly Factory

Score: Tau Kill Points = 2, Imperial Guard Kill Points = 1

Turn Two:

Imperial Guard Turn Two:
The Imperials had been hit hard by the Kroot, who had infiltrated and cut down two whole units in the first turn. The Valhallans deployed from the Chimera and occupied the woods just in-front of the Command Bunker, their lasguns, flamer and fire from the Chimera failed to do any damage to Kroot Squad One. Concentrated fire from the Sentinels Lascannon and Autocannon killed one Crisis Suit, Leman Russ Two Finished them off with it's own Lascannon. On the West Flank, Jugen, the Ogryns and the Command Squad Concentrated their Fire on Kroot Squad Two massacring them. The Imperial Guard gained two more Kill Points and had annihilated the Tau's battle-suits.
Image
The Crisis Suits are caught in the Sentinel's sights

Tau Turn Two:
The Tau had lost two of the best units, and their Kroot attack on the West Flank had been cut to pieces before support could arrive. However on the East Flank they were pressing the Imperial Guard back. The Shas'O immobilised the Chimera and the Kroot Charged the Valhallans routing them and driving them off the Board. Kroot Squad One Consolidated into the Woods once occupied by the Valhallans. On the West Flank, the Hammerhead bagged it's first armoured kill, Blowing up the Basilisk with a solid slug. Shots from Fire Warrior Team One killed two Guardsmen from the Command Squad. The Tau forged ahead again with 2 more Kill Points.
Image
Kroot Squad One forge forward through the cover of the woods.

Score: Tau Kill Points = 4, Imperial Guard Kill Points = 3

Turn Three:

Imperial Guard Turn Three:
The Imperial East Flank was crumbling fast, more fire was poured on the advancing Kroot from the Chimera and the Heavy Weapons team but it proved ineffective against the Kroot who were experts at using the Woodlands as cover. The Sentinels attempted a counter attack and pressed forward across the street, but their shots on the Firewarriors in the office building missed. Commissar Jugen Charged the Hammerhead, but it veered away from his power-fist. The Ogryns following him charged and cut down the Tau Shas'El.

Tau Turn Three:
The Tau West Flank completely crumbled with the death of the Shas'El the Hammerhead quickly escaped Jugen's Grasp and moved onto the ruined highway to Fire at Leman Russ 1, the Rail Shot only stunned the Tank's Crew However. Salvation for the West Flank arrived in the form of the Stealth Team, Who moved onto the Board into the West Park, they Immediately pressed the counter attack in an effort to snub Jugen's Advance. Their fire brought all the Orgyns down to one wound, but they failed to kill any. In the East, The Kroot Stormed the Command Bunker, Massacring the Heavy Weapon Team and Claiming their 3rd overall Kill point. The Shas'O managed to stun the Chimera, but failed to finish it.

Score: Tau Kill Points = 5, Imperial Guard Kill Points = 4

Turn Four:

Imperial Guard Turn Four:
With the arrival of the Stealth Team, Jugen's breakthrough was once again opposed, he pushed the Ogryns on, their fire managed to kill a Steath Suit and take out the Team's Marker Drone. The Sentinels and Leman Russ Two moved to reinforce the East as that flank completely collapsed. A hit from the Leman Russ's Battle cannon wiped Kroot Squad One from the board. Bravo Squad took up the Central push, opening fire on the Tau in the Office Block, killing one.

Tau Turn Four:
With the loss of kroot Squad One, the Tau attack in the East had been halted. The Chimera still stubbornly refused to die, despite the Shas'O's best efforts. The Tau Infantry began moving up as the pace of the battle moved away from their positions. The Hammehead moved forward to support them, stunning Leman Russ One again. The Stealth Team fell back as the Tau attempted to consolidate. Their counter attack was losing it's impetus and they needed to regroup.

Score: Tau Kill Points = 5, Imperial Guard Kill Points = 5

Turn Five:

Imperial Guard Turn Five:
As the Stealth Suits had retreated out of charge range, Commissar Jugen elected to check his advance and pull back to regroup, rather than attempt to match his troops against the accurate Tau fire. Meanwhile in the Centre, the 82nd Vendoland, having stymied the Tau counter attack in the East turned to face the Hammerhead. A Shot from Leman Russ Two destroyed the rail-gun, but the Sentinels failed to finish the beast. Buoyed by newly arrived armoured support, Bravo Squad killed another two Tau from Fire Warrior Team One as the crossfire continued.

Tau Turn Five:
As Jugen's West Push pulls back to regroup, the Stealth Suits immediately reverse their retreat and strike forward again, raining down fire from their burst cannons and annihilating the Ogryns, ripping the heart from what was left of the Imperial Western Flank. In the East, the Shas'O again fails to slay the supposedly easy Kill Point, the Chimera, merely causing a Crew Stunned result. In the Centre, the Hammerhead is damaged but not dead, Moving Closer to the Administratum, it opens fire with both Burst Cannons on Bravo Squad. Fire Warrior Team One lends their fire and those killed in the Crossfire are avenged as 8 guardsmen are killed. However, the Guardsmen hold their ground and deny the Kill Point.

Score: Tau Kill Points = 6, Imperial Guard Kill Points = 5

Turn Six:

Imperial Guard Turn Six:
The Hammerhead now became a priority Target from the Imperial Guard, even without it's Railgun it was a deadly threat. The Command Squad moved in behind the Hammerhead, and fired their Plasma Gun, but it failed to penetrate on the back armour. A Shot from Leman Russ One hit the Hammerhead but it also failed to penetrate. Finally, the Sentinel's Lascannon scored a Vehicle Destroyed Result and the Hammerhead crashed into the rubble of the Collapsed Highway. Leman Russ Two now killed two more Tau from Fire Warrior Team One with it's battle cannon, but they held their ground. Commissar Jugen, under fire from the Stealth Suits, charged into combat with them tearing them apart and gaining another Kill Point for the Imperial Guard and finishing off the Tau West Flank.
Image
The broiling carcass of the Hammerhead spells the turn of the tide against the Tau.

Tau Turn Six:
With the Hammerhead lost, the Centre was wavering, with the Stealth Team lost, the West was gone. The Tau had lost the Lead, and had lost their last real anti-armour. The effort to claim an equalising Kill Point now intensified. Fire Warrior Team One killed two men from the Command Squad (bringing them down to one) but they still refused to run. The Shas'O still engaged in his vendetta with the Chimera, failed to penetrate with his Plasma rifle and even charged the immobilised Vehicle in his desperation to destroy it. However he still failed. Fire Warrior Team Two managed to stun the Sentinels side armour and put them out of the fight, but failed to claim a Kill Point.

Score: Tau Kill Points = 6, Imperial Guard Kill Points = 7

Turn Seven:

Imperial Guard Turn Seven:
As the Battle entered the final stage, the Imperial Guard had the upper hand at last and The Tau were almost completely defeated. Jugen, triumphantly racing past the bodies of the Stealth Team charged the remnants of Fire Warrior Team One, but he failed to kill any. The Sentinels and Leman Russ Two managed to wound the Shas'O but that was all. The Command Squad, down to one man retreated into cover, Bravo Squad did likewise as the Imperial Guard moved to deny any more easy kill points.

Tau Turn Seven:
At 1 Kill Point behind in the final turn, the Tau were in a bad situation. If the battle had ended in Turn Five it would have been a glorious victory, but the Imperial Guard still stubbornly persisted their assault, and their tenacity was giving way to victory. However the Tau were from Fi'rios, A Sept known for it's stubborn refusal to accept defeat. Only two Targets remained that the Tau could hope to claim. The Chimera, which for most of the game had stubbornly refused to die, and Commissar Jugen, who was engaged in hand to hand with Fire Warrior Team One. The Tau of Fire Warrior Team One, managed three wounds on Jugen, which should have killed him. But his "Iron Will" rule allowed him to roll a three and get back up again, denying the Tau a seventh Kill Point. The Battle Lay solely in the hands of the Shas'O, who managed to save the day by rolling a vehicle destroyed result on the Chimera, at Last! With the Chimera Destroyed, the Tau had claimed 7 Kill Points to scrape a last minute draw.

Score: Tau Kill Points = 7, Imperial Guard Kill Points = 7

Game Result: Draw

Conclusion
Colonel Campbell organised his forces into a three pronged push, West, Centre and East. The West was lead by Commissar Jugen an uncompromising commander. The Central Push was made up mostly of the 82nd Vendoland Armoured, while the Eastern Push was vanguarded by the Valhallan Veterans. At first the advance went well, but as the Imperial Guard reached the East/West Highway the Tau struck. Kroot Infiltrators struck the flank Advances. In the East, the result was catastrophic. The Valhallans took massive casualties, and barely managed to rally around their APC's and hold the line. Almost all of their support units were cut to pieces. In the West, It was only the Presence of Commissar Jugen the averted similar disaster. Despite heavy losses, Jugen pressed onward ignoring the brutal casualties his forces received. The Central push fared the best, annihilating a battle-suit attack before it could truly strike. This was a blow that would greatly effect the Tau's ability to combat the Armour that the 82nd could bring to bear, and almost certainly saved the Imperial Guard from total defeat.

Heavy fighting erupted along the Highway as the tau counter attacked. Only Commissar Jugen's advance wasn't stymied, and he pushed further than any other unit that day. In return however, he was badly wounded and his forces received almost 90% casualties. As the Imperial Guard recovered from the shock of the Tau attack, they began to use their armour to great effect. The Tau found they had little to counter it. Their own armour held the Imperials in check until finally they were wiped out. Shas'o'Savon himself fought in the East, where he eventually managed to finish off the stubborn Valhallans, who held out for hours for reinforcements that never arrived. At Length, O'Savon ordered the Withdrawal. Dark was beginning to fall, and he had lost his chance to truly win a victory that day. He had inflicted grievous losses on the Imperials but had suffered a similar percentage of losses in his own forces. As night fell the 125th fortified the Highway, expecting a counter attack the next day. However the Tau had used the darkness to evacuate the city and as dawn broke the next day, the Imperial Guard found the city deserted of Tau Troops.

The Casualties

Man of the Match:

The Battle was a long and drawn out affair that provided many heroic actions for each side. Commissar Jugen's advance was perhaps the greatest feat of martial effort this day, but as the Imperial leader and Hero to begin with, he can be expected to accomplish such great feats of glory. Instead, Man of match must go to Kroot Squad One, who single handedly claimed 3 out of the 7 kill points that the Tau collected. Despite their ignominius death, they also penetrated the furthest into the opponents line than any other units. Special recognition must also go to the Chimera, who held the Left flank alone for nearly 5 turns.

1st Battle of Thermasos

Introduction:
With the Arrival of the Zeist Crusade, the situation had rapidly deteriorated for the Tau on Naxos. For some time, Lord General Lochrig and the 1082nd had been stymied by Shas'o'Savon's Kauyon tactics. However, the sudden and massive assault by the Space Marines had broken the deadlock at Angel Pass with the Battle of St. Sebastian Abbey and captured the Tau command centre in Neoptolomy City. Only the victory at Eurymedon Fords had halted the Ultramarines advance. With the overwhelming might of the Crusade upon them, and the 1082nd now moving through Angel Pass, the Tau positions were no longer tenable. So they retreated to their last stronghold on the planet, The Thermasos Region. Within the dense woodlands of this region, the Tau army slipped from the Imperial's grasp. Needing a quick victory on Naxos, Captain Sicarius of the Ultramarines, 2nd Company spread his forces out, searching for the hidden Tau.

It was the Silver Skulls Chapter who first managed to pin down the Tau, at the First Battle of Thermasos. The Silver Skulls, Lead by their Epistolary, moved to secure lost artefacts from a small temple in the heart of the forest. The temple was now ruined, having become a battleground during the early days of the Civil War. Almost by blind luck, the Space Marines stumbled upon a major Tau encampment. Heavy fighting erupted almost immediately around the ruined Temple and the Tau encampment, as the Tau attempted to eliminate the Space Marines before they could spread word of their location.

The Epistolary Joined Tacitcal Squad 2 and cast the Gate of Infinity Psychic Power. They tried to Deepstrike next to the Shas'El, but scattered 5" towards the Hedge. 1 Marine was lost to the warp during the transfer. Combat Squad 1's Missile Launcher fired a Frag rocket and Killed one of the Drones. The Epistolary and Tactical Squad 2 fired on the Shas'El taking one wound. Image

Roll of a 2 on a d6, game ends

Tau Objective = CONTESTED, Space Marine Objective = CONTESTED

Result: Stalemate

Conclusion:
The 1st Battle of Thermasos was inconclusive. Both sides were caught by surprise and each sought to pin the other down while reinforcements arrived. What resolved was a bitter battle that killed or severely wounded 7 Battle Brothers of the Silver Skull's Chapter. Despite this, the Tau were unable to eradicate the Space Marines. Finally after several hours of battle, the Silver Skull's evacuated with their wounded and Relics that they had collected, along with the Location of the Tau encampment. At the same time however, the Space Marines had been unable to pin the Tau forces down and the Tau were able to smoothly withdraw from their encampment before the Ultramarines could arrive. However, the Tau had been discovered and the Hunt was on, the 1st Battle of Thermasos would directly facilitate the final encounter on Naxos between Tau and Imperial forces. The 2nd Battle of Thermasos would enforce O'Savon's final evacuation of the planet and present another early victory for the Zeist Crusade.

Man of the Match:
For the Space Marines, the Epistolary was a force to be reckoned with and killed by the far the most models in the game. However as an HQ he was expected to perform thus. No other Space Marines truly performed above and beyond the call of duty. For the Tau, the Kroot were the unit to do significant damage, wiping out a whole combat squad (the firewarriors came close). However 'Man of the Match' would have to the Tau Pathfinder's, who by holding their position in Close Combat with Tactical Squad 2 managed to wrest a draw from certain defeat.
