Here is my small cadre. The red is actually Red Gore but the pictures show it much brighter, so I will retake as many as I can in a few days.

The two WIP's are a SM commander for a friend and a Pirahna which I am going to resculpt and repaint.
If anyone posted suggestions on what to buy next I will be eternally grateful. C&C welcome.

After looking at all the units, I can say that I only really like the idea behind the stealth suits and the Devilfish - the colour scheme is nice for both.

You could do a bit better with the execution for the rest of the minis, however - it is generally a good idea to constrain a single colour to a field on a miniature enclosed by a physical line (like you did with the magenta parts on the DF). Also, if you do it like this and you have a black undercoat for all the miniature, which you leave untouched in the cavities, it creates a nice shading effect and makes the general appearance more "contrasting".

What are you making from the marine?

Hey nice Stealth suits I like them hehe.

I'll just say a little tip, you just gotta go back to yer models buddy and retouch up some of your painting oopsies, and you might want to do all the crevices and grooves etc like the lines on the model might want to fill them in with chaos black, or try something like a bright green etc, just to break it up hehe.

cheers mate

Id like to ad my opinion and advice

1.) I like the color scheme just not the metalic look...I believe imo that the the metalic colors don't fit the Tau in too much quanitiy
2.) Your colors are way too thick...water them down a bit
3.)Use longer, finer strokes when painting...
4.) after you apply the undercoat user color layering to better the effects of colors
5.) Add the extreme higlights (also in layering if you want) to the hard edges of the minis and then add the shades with a 00 Citadel brush for fine details

you can find painting tutorials on http://www.dakkadakka.com

Thanks for the tips!
bgfreak I'm not sure what you mean by breaking up the red- do you mean I need black lines between the red and the silver?
Don't know what the SM is- haven't ever seen an SM codex- but I know it needs a bolt pistol, and a power weapon/fist. I'm gonna make both weapons and make them hook onto the outstretched thumb.

Valaska My mate's Space Marine is still a WIP (Work In Progress) and I have not finished. I bought it for 50p of a different friend and I'm using milliput and bitz to make it into a unique commander. I'll be repainting it later.

Sketch 1)Sorry I'm not changing the entire scheme, and IMHO the silver looks good with red.
2) I'll water them down, sir!
3) I'll use long thin brushstrokes, sir!
4) Sir, haven't a clue what your on about, sir!
5) I'll add highlights, sir!
6) I'll look at dakkadakka, sir!
:P :fear:
(PS. How is :fear: fear? and  looks like his trousers fell down!)

Hehe no I meant on your Tau :3, just have to go over them and re-touch them up a little and then with all your crevices, the lines in the devilfish tank etc, and paint black on them and make sure you catch all the slips of you paintbrush hehe, I have done it to a few of my guys and never even noticed till I took pictures myself lol.

1.) I didnt mean it like that, I just gave my opinion ^^
4.) Use watered down layers of color to make the main colors stand out...for exp. I want to paint my Tau with a bright red so I add a watered down (4:1) of Red Gore and then i add a coat of Blood red (also 4:1) and then I highlight them with Blazing orange

If the new How to Paint book is anything like the old one, it is a great place to start. It explains things like shading, highlighting, and other painting goodies that will immensely improve your minis. Another thing: Take your time. Rushing minis is bad. This make you make mistakes. Over time, your eyes will adjust to the scale of the model and you will see even the slightest of mistakes.

Sketch; At this point in his painting career, a 00 brush won't do much. Heck, I do all my details with a starter brush, and (usually) they turn out fine.

Oh, yeah, lightning, some of your shoulder pads are upside down.

The sooner he starts working on fine detail the better

I myself am a novice (started a month ago) and Ive gotten better using the 00 brush, in my humble opinion

I use a Fine Detail Citadel brush for details.
Yes, I noticed the upside-down shoulder pads. My first squad I bought unpainted off Ebay and I realised the old owner had put them on upside-down. Then I accidentally did it in my young stupidness (I'm ten). So you know I've been painting for about 2-3 months- it takes a while for me to save up for those expensive spacemen.

EDIT- No, sorry, it's gone by quick- about 5-6 months!

Holy mother of god, you're ten?!?!

For a 10-year-old (and I mean this as a compliment as most 10-year olds know how to paint a stickman...maybe :P) youre doin' good...in half-a-year you'll rock the block :D

Hmm... just a problem. In half-a-year I'll be moving on to either Tyranids or Daemons- a completely different style.

And seriously? A stickman? I'm good at art but I know several 10-11 year olds who paint 40k models. And close up they're a lot better than mine.

What 10!? Oh god I feel old now.... And I'm only 19...

Though I have to say you are doing mighty fine if you really are 10 years old, and I do hope you keep interrest in miniatures. I sense you could become really great if you hang on. Damn if I were as good as you when I was 10 xD Good work !

I just can say, welcome in this club...

My little Brother is nine and painted a dwarf that was for free in one of the WDs, he's quite interested in those minis. At my cost, he's often standing besides me and asking questions while I'm painting.

I started with this hobby in the age of ten, too. But believe me my minis looked worse than yours :D We say in Germany: "Frueh uebt sich, wer ein Meister werden will." The meaning is like: There's nothing like starting young.

I'm 25! So by your standarts I'm dead already :dead: . 20 or 50 what difference does it make if you like what you're doing, keep working and everything will come, listen only to those who give you helpful advices and don't bother paying attention to those who say that what you are doing is crap.

That's the spirit! Though I have no pictures :::( I HAVE blacklined the tank / Shas'O and am trying to gather the courage to have 18 Fire Warriors on my desk again just for some black lines. Problem is I'm short on money so my efforts are towards cleaning so my mum gives me pocket money for the first time in several months :( .

I'm not dead, believe it or not!
After seeing Jordtron's WIP Weathered Enclave I decided by Tau were too clean- so NEW PICTURES!!!

I think I may of over-done the mud/weathering, but hey-ho! Listwise I have decided not to field my Stealthsuits during 500pt games, instead I use O'D'Nan, the Fire Warriors and the Dfish, and have given them loads of upgrades. And yes, O'D'Nan is the same Crisis suit as in my original post!
He is now a Ninja'O and I actually have a Shas'Ui that costs 40 points! (Shas'Ui, Markerlight, Bonding Knife, Hard-wired Multi-tracker)

Ill give you advice mate :)

go to dakkadakka and look up some basic tutorials...take the painting slowly...

its very smudgy, very dirty, low detailed...sorry but this isnt tabletop quality imho

next figure you paint, take it slow...i took 3 hours to paint my last figure (a firewarrior) and its, imho, 50% better than my other attempts which I made in 30 minutes

Well the idea is, Sketch, that they are kind of dirty. In some fluff for my cadre I'm working on they are cut off from the Empire on a Kroot planet. It's incredibly muddy/dangerous/swampy and their armour is incredibly dirty and damaged. As a testament to this they don't clean their armour/gear, and all their Trials By Fire are held on that world.
What do you think of D'Nan's suit? It is actually the same one as in my original post. I think I'll leave the foot severed, it kind of gives his suit some individuality.
My next suit, in about six weeks or so, will be my Shas'El. I plan to give him Iridium armour and a load of strange looking modifications. I'll call him Shas'El Tau'N Suam'Anuk Shi'Yhe'Kauyon, Flamebird Victorious Death-hunter.

Actually I will change that fluff. There are too many cadres saying they got cut off from the Empire and become hardened veterans.
