I use Cajun seasoning to base my Tau and I was curious if anyone else used unusual materials to base their models. Figured it might make a funny/helpful thread.

Well, it makes for an interesting aroma when I open my carrying case.

The owner of my old college game shop used to keep his eldar infantry in an old gummi-peach candy container. That chemical peach smell wafting up from the table at deployment was always good for a laugh.

I use tea as small, little leaves. I got the idea from the Lord of the Rings movies, as that's what they used in their bigatures.

It looks amazing as flock.

I used the red sand from Prince Edward Island on several of my models. It should be noted its not actually red it's more of a rust colour. I think it not only looks nice, it also make my army appealling in that it's exotic.

if you care to see I have it on my WIP just go through my profile there's a link there

I know a Necron player who bases his 'Crons with the fully nucleated graphite from the walls of the reactor at the nearby nuclear power plant. Typically they just grind it up and take it to a dump, but his buddy got him a large container of it. It looks like crushed black glass- think obsidian. Really fitting for Necrons

The stuff's totally harmless, but I still don't want to hold it to close to anything... important

That sounds perfect for Nerons. You'd just have to keep an eye on an army like that, make sure it doesn't start moving on its own!!!

A necron army moving on it's own? Irony!

OT, I just found out my router has enough range to connect in my shed!

I recently discovered that, for stones like limestone, the trays in wich I buy the meat at the market, are great. The are made of polyfam, which is better than expanded polyestirene, and can hold heavy miniatures in different poses without breaking or unglueing. Also grinded coffee loocks really cool in earthy bases. Has nice smell too^^.

The cajunbases looks really good! Now I want to try it too! ^^
Coffee could look really good too, I would however have to locate a cup of coffee every time I take my minis out though. (Kind of addicted! :P)

Also if the cajun colors don't work they sell multi-seasoning shakers that could cover lots of different terrain.

for example:

I think these all work well for wastelands or deserts, but if you got some oregano or other green-leafy-types, it would work well for a temperate theme.

a couple of mint leaves for basil leaves could make a good overgrown plant (think 'nid invasion), and aquarium plants are also good for large bases.

As strange as this seems, paper mache is a good way to texture bases and build up hills
Just my $0.02
Sorry I don't have any pics of guys with kool bases

I use slate for my bases, it kinda makes it look like they're fighting on, like a shale mountain, especially with the larger pieces, I use those for the ones that I don't want right in the front line, like my pathfinders, and pulse rifle FWs...okay, why are your pictures mirrored?

I'd like to see some pic's if you've got them.

Uh its mirrored because of a warp storm near my location...

Not buying that excuse... Ok, so maybe I can't figure out how to get them un-flipped, I'm just using photobooth on my macbook. I'm kinda a computer dunce. :-?

I've used black aquarium gravel and black calcium sand (got it in a pet store, they normally use it for lizard habitats) for my Dark Eldar. Has that obsidian look you were talking about.

I've also used aquarium plant pieces as parts of jungle-like or Tyranid-like plants on my (Tyranid, go figure) bases.

For my Tau, I've just used standard snow flock, however.

I wouldn't say it's all that unusual.. most golden demon painters use a variety of herbs to do their bases and have been for a long time, particularly with fantasy models.

They do look good though.
