I would really appreciate ideas of how to build my tau commander to fit my theme.
I have one idea, but I'm really interested in what you people have to offer.

Obviously Grievous needs to make a cameo...might as well be your commander...

Now, it would seem like you don't have any Auxilaries and I only see one Hammerhead, so why not go with a Farsight army? Grievous had Lightsabers as well as blasters, so that would work best.

As for how to model him, I need to think about that one a bit.

Yes, I am already building an Etheral with bodyguards/drones, but I'm still obliged to take the mandatory Tau Commander.

Great work so far! I can't wait to see these guys painted up. I second the consensus that the backwards helmets look a LOT more like the droids should.

As an aside it always bothered me how in Star Wars the 'droids spoke to one another, wouldn't it make a lot more tactical sense to use radio/laser/something less detectable to spread the orders around?

Thank you all for the great feedback. So far I've done about 20 models with the new helmet.

A legal army has to include atleast 1 Tau Commander in Crisis suit.

I'm planning to build a General Grievous in his monowheel bike (w Plasma/missile)

I do still appreciate ideas for other Commanders aswell...

And for those damn devilfishes...

Devilfishes: get a trade federation tank thing from the first movie. I assume it is a hollow mini, so to make it tourney legal, fill up the inside with old sprue! You'll have a perfect representation of the tank and as long as it's X% sprue, it' legal. (although somehow I imagine people considering this a 'dirty trick' :P)

Maybe I forgot to say I only want tips involving GW.
I never use anything else. (pingpong balls are first half-exception for 10 years)

You could ditch the Ethereal once you reach 1500pts and add Farsight, aka Grievous with a BIG GUN, one lightsaber and a small shield generator thingymajig.
Until then, the General Grievous on Wheelbike sounds good, and a Wat Tambor as an Ethereal (he's the guy with green skin from TechnoUnion with a machine suit) would be cool.

The torso of the Broadside/Super Battle Droid is the Wraithlord torso flipped upside down with a Wraithlord shoulderguard added.

I've done similar conversions with space marine torsos aswell.
Not the best picture here, but it gives you an idea...

A couple of thoughts.

First, this stuff is truly excellent! Very creative, very inspiring and very, very well executed. I look forward with anticipation to seeing these little guys lined up and painted on the field. Thank you for sharing your work.

Second, Devilfish. not easy. The MTT transport is the most obvious choice, but to do it to scale would make it far too large for game purposes. It should be used for a special carrier in apoc games, maybe a firewarrior Orca? But what about a Battledroid Troop Carrier?

Here is a link to a website with technical drawings of starwars vehicles of all sorts:
http://www.dorlingkindersley-uk.co.uk/static/html/features/starwars/technology_gallery/index.html

There is a good picture of the Carrier on page 1, and of the MTT on page 3. It is about the right size, and carries a number of droids closer to that of a Dfish than the MTT does. While it looks like it should be open topped, this shouldn't matter, maybe since it is droids its 'open topped-ness' is negated.
As mentioned above, you could make the droid racks out of Railgun halves for the long piece, sprues for the little arme that hold the droids and the two Dfish doors for the plates at either end of the rack. The bottom plate of a Dfish chassis with the droid holders cut off could be made to work as the base for the carrier with a bit of work, and the front plate on the carrier is close enough in shape to an upturned Dfish nose with the drone holders removed, or even a Piranha nose. While the Carrier does not seem to mount any weaponry, adding a BC shouldn't be a problem, and whatever you use to represent drones in a droid army I'm sure they can be made to attach somehow without altering the design substantially.

Third, a commander. Grevious is a fantastic idea, and I look forward to seeing your monowheel conversion, but another idea could be to make Count Dooku on his Speeder! There is a nice picture of the speeder on page 2 of the linked webpage, and the speeder's similarlity to a jetbike would make a closer approximation of the suit's JsJ ability.

One more thought would be to use the design for the droid gunship on the same page for a skyray!
Anyways, now I'm getting carried away... but I look forward to your updates!
