I am at last beginning to get my act together and get on with my new cadre. The background idea is Black Ops, with the cadre being called "Y'aun't'mon", or "The Shades of Death". The cadre therefore is not being painted in a bright set of colours, and is rendered thus so far:
Mr Fire Warrior.

Please remember that this is a trial model and has not been completely finished paint-wise.

The basecoat is Rotting Flesh with an undiluted coat of Badab Black wash all over, followed by 3 coats of Devlan Mud (again undiluted). The gaiters, gauntlets and straps are a Vallejo German medium brown, with Badab Black wash x2. The green sections are Scaly Green with again Badab Black wash.

My problem is: what colour to do the Tau symbol on the shoulder pad? Yes - that's all I'm asking help for! I know what I'm doing with the rest of the model, but sept markings and that symbol are annoying me.

Please remember that this cadre is Black Ops, so they will not be drawing attention to themselves (hence the muting of the Scaly Green sections).

Thanks for any input.

E.

Edit: Darn it, I just hate close-ups. There's a tiny speck of Scaly green on his flippin' helmet!

What about something around um.. the other brown besides Scorched Brown that I use.. um.. kinda chestnuty.. Bestial Brown :) There's three or four browns around that level of brightness (rather not bright), that fit the same general palette of your brownish cloth, so they shouldn't be too out of place, and they're not as glaring as white.

That's a good thought there, M-S. Hmm...Vermin Fur/Snakebite Leather/Scorched Brown/Bestial Brown would be the probable choices then. Highlight would be Bleached Bone mix with basecoat colour (except Scorched Brown, since it goes a horrible shade of pink).

How about green alternatives? Or could that be introducing another colour which would clash badly with the more blue-green colour of Scaly Green?

This is where my Bretonnian roots get me into trouble ;) The only greens I've really worked with are Goblin Green, Snot Green (the most common) and Dark Angel Green. All of which tend to be big, bright and heraldric, and thus counter to what you're going for.

Some of the darker greens might make it, but you do have to try and get something closer to the dark green trim color you used. Maybe something in sort of a Jade tone? I once got a really nice swirly effect on a Falcon before I sold my eldar by starting with Dark Angel Green and drybrushing Snot Green over it. A sort of swirly gemstone look so to speak.

The other thought, is what are you doing for lenses? Those often are able to be a totally different color from the rest of the model, but lights and lenses introduce other colors into the fray.

Thinking about it, Dark Angel Green sorta looks like it'd work. I use it for the casings on my las-class weaponry ;)

Gems and lenses! D'oh! I completely forgot that this is what I was intending to do with the symbols. Sheesh - my head is fried with too much caffeine today. In that case, the green colour would be the optimum choice, going with Chaos Black (well, Vallejo's equivalent!) Scaly, Jade, Skull.

This is what prompted me to "gem-ify" the symbol:

Afterthought: I assume that the brown colours wouldn't really suit?

Ok after trying different style on Photoshop, i think a Turquoise basis would perfectly fit the scaly green you used on your trial!

Here a sample (do it a lil' darker and it will be perfect! :) )

That's a good idea, Martial. Merging from Scaly through Hawk Turquoise would work pretty well, creating a sort of opal-esque type of gem. Basecoat Chaos Black, mix black and Scaly and proceed with the usual method of gem painting?

I could also do something along the same lines using the DA Green and so on which M'yen Shi suggested. Maybe doing a selection of colours might be in order.

Since the scaly green is a melt between green and turquoise, Dark angel green and Turquoise will work pretty well!

i'm just wondering how it will work if we reverse the gem technique, i must try it!!! :crafty:
