Amazing paint scheme

I really like the use of the different shades of gray but also the orange sept markings

Great Job :P

Truly an excellent example of a Tau army. Very well done indeed, Mu'kau.

Greetings once again,

Thank you all for the comments on my first post, I am a little overwhelmed. It seems that a number of people have expressed interest so I am happy to include a tutorial below. If it needs any clarification, or expansion, Please let me know and I will edit.

Mu'kau's Camouflage tutorial:

In this tutorial will explain how I apply my urban camouflage pattern.

Colours used:
Base coat: Citadel Foundation Adeptus Battlegrey.
Mid tone: Citadel Fortress Grey.
Vehicle dags: 50%Vallejo offwhite (70820) 50% Citadel Fortress Grey.
Battlesuit and infantry dags: Vallejo off white (70820)
Machine parts: Citadel Foundation Charadon Granite (Truly the greatest colour ever invented)
Missile nose cones and other "danger" parts: Citadel shadow grey.

The basic pattern I devised for the camouflage on my cadre is this:
Image

When starting, I devised a number of rules to follow in order for the army to look consistent.

The basic rules I adhered to when applying the pattern were that the it did not line up with any panel lines on the model, all of the mid tone panels would be four sided, and all of the top layer “dags” would be triangles or trapezoids. Also that the pattern scale would be relatively large compared to the model that it was to be applied to, so that the overall regularity of the pattern would not be evident. On the vehicles, I have generally applied 4 or 5 panels of the mid tone colour on the main hull, and 2 mid tone panels on the engines and drones. The vehicles have very light grey dags as the near white colour used on the infantry models looked too stark, conversely, the light grey dags did not stand out enough on the Infantry. Fire warriors and battlesuits have 2 mid tone panels per armour or body section. I have only applied the white dags on Fire Warrior helmets and left shoulder pads because the tiny dags on the other armour panels broke up the lines of the models too much.
I broke my second rule with the Tigershark, as the mid tone four sided panels looked too much like a grid on such a large model, and scaling up the pattern any further meant that it did not fit well with the tanks that I had already completed, so I went with an irregular shape. Highlighting was kept to 2 stages on all models to prevent the greys blending together too much when viewed from a distance.

This technique involves quite a lot painting over the same area more than once, so its important to keep your paints thin!

On the vehicles and suits, I start by roughly blocking out the mid tone colour panels with a relatively dry brush and only a little water added to the paint. I then tidy the lines with a thinned down coat of the base colour. This is why I use a Citadel foundation paint as the base, it covers really well. It is at this stage that I usually give the armour panel lines a Black wash. I find that the initial dry brush leaves an extremely fine texture on the surface of the model which helps the later, much thinner coats stay where they are supposed to be while drying and helps me stay inside the lines. :) To get a solid colour and a nice smooth finish on the mid grey panels usually takes 2-3 coats. Once these have been applied I go back and tidy over any mistakes again with the base colour
Image

The next part is to start painting the dags. I use a fairly large, long bristled brush. This helps keep the lines straight because you can use the side of the brush and its really only the pointed corners that you will need to tidy I paint a roughly triangle, again with slightly drier paint and then fill in with 2 applications of much thinner paint , then tidy up with whichever colour the dag shape is sitting on. Where I have a dag crossing 2 areas of colour, I paint a V over the boundary then define the rest of the shape later, with thinner paint. As long as the sides of the V are straight, and your brush strokes cross over at the point, you will get a good shape.
Image
Image
It is actually much easier to apply this scheme to small infantry models than tanks, as the panels are so much smaller. You can define and mostly fill a shape with one or two brush strokes using slightly thicker paint.
Image

I hope that this post will be of some help to those wishing to apply this or a similar camo scheme to their models.
Thank you to Wolfs16, Fraggle and Eiglepulper for the warp speed response to my troublesome username and the promotion!

Militant.Jester: I'm not sure where the Stealth Suit part came from, I think it is from the Imperial guard weapons sprue.

Stwide: Anything with a stealth field generator is getting the darker scheme.

Whitefire: If red is your colour, then perhaps you could try something like this:

That I do like Cheers Mu'kau.

I will give this a shot once I have removed all the old paint, However I think I may cheat a little and make use of my 3M Blue masking tape since I know the Dexterity in my hands will not like the crisp lines that much.

Cheers for the Sample scheme and Hopefully should put your tutorial to good use.

Not sure If I said it or not. Welcome to ATT :D and keep up the good work.

*Edited at the Request of Wolfs16 Will try and keep the Grammar and spelling better but now I am down to running everything through the hotmail spellcheck due to the Death of my word programmes :-? *

Oh wow, how did I miss this!? An amazing rendition of what was basically a sketch. I've already saved this to my "Tau Inspiration" folder.

Hello all. No new photos yet as I have been crazy busy drawing concept art for my new job, I hope to get some stuff up on this thread next week. In the meantime, I thought some people here might appreciate this: Scrawled while I was taking a breather.

Hmmm... This scheme idea seems very familiar... But about 100 times better than what I did. Great job I must say, nice and even, its blends without turning into a clash of camo. I really can't say much more right now, kinda still trying to believe you did all that free hand. (and so well!) Keep up the amazing work.

Hello all.

Long time no update! Ill have some more stuff up soon, but for now, here's the pulse submunition rifle that I'm going to cast up four of as alternate weapons for my 2 burst cannon XV9's. I also have in the works a plasticard/procreate XV8 re-design incorporating some of the design philosophy of the XV9. Watch this space!

I'm absolutely loving this. Fantastic use of plasticard tubing to get the curved surfaces in the xv8. I can't wait to see the final results!

I love what you've done here. Your plasticard skills are amazing! How much of the rifle is sculpted or scratchbuilt? The legs are also beautiful and really look in line with the recent Tau design change. How did you create those curved surfaces? Especially the thigh; it looks like it has a bit of a lip to it.

Oh and just to remind everyone, please do not post requests for the OP to sell you a copy or anything like that. We don't want to get in trouble with our website host. Thanks in advance!

Those legs are amazing ( I can't believe I am saying that about a model...) yes indeed, how did you do it? I can't even cut the stuff straight!

Great to see you're back in business, Mu'kau! And lovely preview, at that.

Can't wait to see what you have in store for us- you're one of my sources of inspiration, so you'd better live up to that role :P

Thank you for sharing your work with us once again,

Kiten

Both projects look great, I'm espesially looking forward to see how the rest of the XV8 turns out. I'm not much of a pasticard guy so I love it when someone like you swings around the block.

Thanks for the replies,

I should have some progress and better pictures of both this weekend, The rifle is entirely plasticard and grey putty. the round part is a press mould of a trimmed battlesuit shield generator, I would have used an original, but I like to keep them as disruption pods for my tanks. The lower part of the barrel has a thin skin of putty rolled through a pasta machine. I lay it over the plasticard and cut the panel lines with a scalpel, then trim it up once it has dried. I will be doing this to the upper barrel as well. The curved surfaces on the legs are from varying diameters of plastic tube. I used tube that was quite a bit larger on the thighs for a shallower curve. I'll be filling the overhanging parts of the thighplate with putty as i add detail to the back of the legs to get something more solid as currently the legs are very weak.

Terminatorinhell: In regards to cutting plasticard straight, Its actually not too hard at this scale as the individual cuts that you need to make are never any longer than the scalpel blade itself. When working on stuff this small, I always mark everything out carefully and cut the parts slightly large then trim with the knife and use a bit of superfine glass paper taped to my desk to make a nice edge.

Mu'kau.

Hey Mu'kau,

I have bin following your WIP for some time now and Im imprest by the quality of your work. I really like your plastic card work man. that rifle looks so clean. I thought that you used bitz from an original tau kit, but then I read your post about the "how" and was stunned to find out that the grew stuff is actually putty. very impressive and Ill give it a go my self. ill be using milliput.

Im truly Impressed by the legs you have done. will you be using a tau kit as an base for the torso?

well, great work and looking forward to see an update!

Daan

Hello once again ATT,

I have recently been absent from my Tau army due to moving house, and commiting myself to assisting with the conversion and painting of my friends Ork army which we took to the UK 40K doubles at warhammer world, under the condition that Darren, the filthy Ork player helps me with my Tau in the 2012 doubles. We had a great weekend and played 6 fantastic games with our Dakka army of Dakkaness (I am bringing the ignorant Be'gel around to the awesomeness of firepower and mobility) and ended up getting best army despite some amazingly fierce competition! As soon as I can get some decent shots of the army as a whole I wil post them here.

Me, on the left and foul Ork on the right. I feel dirty.
Image
A few selected pieces can be found on Darren's site:
http://www.propaintedmodels.co.uk/?p=16

To celebrate, I bought a Barracuda at the Forge World shop, and was so excited, I had finished painting it by the end of the Monday we came back! I have wanted one of these for ages as an escort for my Tigershark
Image

The Tournament was a really good kick for me to get painting again after seeing all the nice Imperial guard vehicles I decided that I had to finish all my tanks! As soon as these are completed. I will be back to my modelling as I have a large apocalypse game looming and we have restricted ourselves to fully painted models only.
Image

The tank swarm so far. This colour scheme really does take ages to paint. Its good to have motivation from people on his forum. Only another million tanks and suits and I'll consider the army complete. I am hopelessly addicted to Tau. There can never be enough.
Image

Crisis suit used to test weathering powders:
Image

Apologies for the poor photos, Bright natural light is not in great supply where I live at the moment.
More updates soon as I really have the painting bug now.

Mu'kau.

I have always been a fan of your color scheme Mu'kau, so it's good to see more additions to the army. My Tau have a shortage of vehicles, mainly because I hate painting them. How did you accomplish this large feat? This provides me with a lot of motivation to get my own Barracuda painted. :)

Any progress made on that suit scratchbuild? Oh and congrats on your win with the Orks! I have seen pictures of that army and it is fantastic.

Excellent painting Mu'Kau. The fact that all the vehicles have differing patterns really helps the feel of the army.

You also have some sweet conversion work going on here, I want to see this new XV when you're finished!
