Do you know why we call it Reclaimer? Because it has been here a long, long time…

Image

Before our people first ventured into the stars, it had spread its seeds throughout this galaxy, burrowing into untold planets. Silently these seeds grew; waiting, watching… learning. Now they call out for their long lost kin, they seek to be recovered.

We hurt it on Ge’nesha. We fought it back and crippled it. But we could not kill it. And so it left; it nursed its wounds and it grew stronger. We tried again at Kor’Nars, tried to catch it before it fully awoke. But we failed….and suffered dearly for it.

But here, here on Kur we will destroy it. It has returned to gather back more of its distant kin and we will let it do so. Let the Ksi'm'yen do as they please. The fate of the Gue’la they are trying to win over is irrelevant. We will not get a second chance at this. For this, our cadre has been created and in this task we will succeed.

Every favor has been called in; every ally has been summoned. We will lure the Y’he to this planet, we will let them engage the Gue’la, and we will let them enter right into our trap.

And then we will kill it, once and for all...

So believe it or not, I have been feeling an urge to start my Tyranid again. As followers of my projects have no doubt noticed, I love the Tyranid as villains. I think I like it simply because they are not “bad guys.” They are animals. There is no way to humanize them or really understand them. They are not trying to be evil, they are simply hungry.

So what are my plans for this log? Well I have no desire to stop working on my Marines, nor do I have any desire to put aside some additions to my Tau army. So why not combine all three logs together into one large story?

So here is the plan: This log will detail the struggle for the planet Kur, a frontier world on the Eastern Fringe. While Imperials are involved (humans being the main planetary occupant), they will only be background players. The focus will be on the Tau (ARC-16s & the ARC-1s), the Shadow Guardians (my Space Marine Chapter) and the Hive Fleet known as Reclaimer. Some will notice that my Tyranid have changed from a Splinter Fleet, to a Hive Fleet. Well that will be explained as the story progresses.

So let’s set the stage with a little background on our setting, shall we?

Image

Planetary Datafax:
Kur

Class: Sub-Terran (Rotation - 48 standard hours, 1.4G, Mass - 1.4 TM)

Designation: Frontier World

Population: Human, 2.3 million estimated.

Tithe Grade: Decuma Particular

Climate/Geography/Biosphere:
Similar Terran levels of oxygen indicate a pre-Imperial terraforming. The planet contains three continents which are dotted with large cities. The general landscape is covered in mountain ranges and large, flat fields. Extensive networks of tunnels exist in all population centers. These tunnels were not originally constructed by the Kuriens and were discovered upon settlement of the planet. Temperatures can vary by geographic location and are almost always livable. Large farms and fishing ports provide food for most inhabitants.

Governmental Type: Unitary Republic. One Planetary Governor reigns over the planet, delegating tasks to the administrators of each continent. The position of Governor is generally passed along hereditary lines.

Planetary Governor: High Chief Resu Utanu

Adept Presence: None

Military: Divisions of PDF troops are stationed on each continent, with local bases throughout cities and other settlements. Above the planet three orbital platforms provide planetary defense and enable the use of a small defense fleet. The orbital defenses are staffed by PDF troops who live exclusively in orbit.

Trade/Economy/Notes: For centuries Kur provided troops and weapons to traveling ships along the Eastern Fringe. Yet as time went on the tithes grew more severe and with greater frequency. Invasion and subsequent damage to the planets infrastructure further exacerbated this problem. Surrounded by three orbital platforms, the planet is able to provide safe docking for ships and enact minor repairs.

Now what is a project log without some pictures to get people excited? Here is a sample of the Tyranid I will be bringing to the table:
Image
Space Hulk Genestealers will be a big part of the new swarm. Gotta put those little guys to good use!

The bases will all be using Secret Weapon Miniatures Alien Invasion themed bases. I might have some I create on my own, but I really like the look of these bases and it should be cool to paint bases in an entirely different fashion! Here is just a sample of one of the 60mm bases:
Image

Lastly, here is one of the big beasties I will be using in this list. I plan on having two Trygons, so here is #1!

Image
Image
Image

The jaws are taken from the Mawloc head, with antenna cut off. I think it makes him look more menacing, no? You’ll also notice a missing set of scything talons. Well since I plan on making another Trygon out of some Carnifex bitz and a Trygon tail, I wanted to save some for him to use. So I saw an idea used by Hive Fleet Hydra (the best Tyranid swarm out there) and wanted to copy it.

Image
It looks like he has some intense burrowing claws now. Of course, green stuff is still needed, but this is the initial stage.

So there ya have it guys! I will soon be updating with more Tyranid progress and some Space Marines. Also, I will totally be getting my Tau Barracuda done in this log. :)

As it is traditional for humans to name Hive Fleets (at least officially) after monsters from mythology, some suggestions:

OUTSTANDING!!

Though I've got not much else to add to this thread at the moment, I eagerly await the next update.

Oh and let's keep the Xenomorphs in check with that base, don't need my all time favorite alien decimating your swarm before it gets off it's feet. :P

Thanks for the good vibes fellas! :) I think I can keep this updated consistently. I am going to shoot for at least once a week, so we'll see how that goes!

Didi et Gogo:
Thanks for the info! I debated for a long time about what to call my Hive Fleet (these guys were started like 4 years ago!), but I eventually came to select Reclaimer. The thing that has to be kept in mind is that the name is not a human designation, but a Tau one. The Tau don't have mythical beasts in their history, so they would likely pick a name that was more descriptive than menacing. The Sacean forces that would one day become the ARC-16s first encountered the swarm on Ge'nesha. They gave it the name after observing its peculiar behavior. But the details are for another update... :crafty: Interestingly, the Shadow Guardians have another name for the swarm, but for the sake of simplicity, Reclaimer will be the standard.

Ar'ka:
Aren't those bases awesome?! I want the bases to represent the slow conversion of the surface of the planet. So forces like Genestealers will have bases with some fleshy parts overtaking the ground, more advanced forms like Hive Guards will have fully swarm converted bases. I think it would mesh well regardless.

I am definatly going to like this thread!

And I like and dislike the Alien bases at the same time, it does make me think of a tyranid takeover, but the little Alien egg pods bug me.

Can't wait to see more Wolf!

I suspected that this was the case! Just for completeness, my heart yearns for an additional name that follows the conventions of the Imperium, but if humans are not the central protagonists, then it is unnecessary. I am curious about the Guardians' designation for the Hive Fleet, but I guess I'll have to wait. :(

The Plight of Kur

Image
++981.M1 Elements of Ultima Segmentum Battlefleet emerge near Kur to reinforce the beleaguered planet.++

Kur has been a world stretched to its limit. From the time that it had first been settled, it has always been a busy frontier world. Many explorers on the Eastern Fringe found resupply here and the world provided abundantly. The local populace was known to be a tenacious people and made excellent Imperial Guardsmen. However, as the centuries passed, the planet has suffered its share of disasters.

In 980.M41, Kur was one of many worlds that lost communication with the Imperium after Waaagh! Starkilla rampaged through the sector. After suffering a major defeat, some of the fleeing Ork fleets made its way to Kur, seeking to resupply before they attempted another attack. But if they expected an easy raid, they were in for a surprise. The local populace fought hard to repel the invaders, effectively utilizing Kurs vast tunnel network to constantly harass the invaders. In time, the Imperium was able to reinforce the planet and break the Ork horde. In the wreckage of Ork vessels, maps and battle plans were discovered which pointed to the exact location of Starkilla’s remaining forces.

As time was of the essence, the Imperials gathered a great deal of supplies from the planet before leaving to hunt down and eliminate the remaining Orks. While the Imperium would eventually defeat the greenskins on some foreign world, Kur was forced to rebuild on its own. The remaining PDF were hard-pressed to keep control of the population who clamored for food or medical supplies. Worse yet, surviving Orks raided camps and settlements, forcing the already taxed PDF to enact harsh protocols to ensure the safety of the population.

Under the command of the fierce planetary Governor, Resu Utanu, the PDF brutally stamped out any infraction or rebellion committed by the local populace. Additionally kill teams were sent out regularly to find and eliminate the remaining Ork threat. It took five years, but eventually the last of the Orks were found and burned. With this victory, the people of Kur could focus exclusively on rebuilding population centers and fixing the damage caused by the Ork attack.

But such peace was not to be, as previously undetected damage to certain city infrastructures lead to several tragic accidents and even a massive explosion which destroyed most of Hive Akan. Akan was once the planets primary manufacturing facility and with its loss, the planet was unable to mass produce any of its normal exports. Still, the people of Kur pushed on and tried desperately to rebuild. But in the years that followed, Kur endured many raids by pirates and roving Chaos warbands which further drained its dwindling supplies. The most unexpected loss, however, was not from a renegade or xeno threat, but was brought by the cost of the Imperial Tithe.

Forcing Kur to lose sorely need soldiers, weapons and resources, the local PDF was reduced to a shadow of its former self. While Governor Utanu tried desperately to reason with the Administratum authorities, they coldly reminded him of his duty to the Imperium and ensured that the conflicts these resources would go to support were worth far more than his world alone. Stalwart acceptance has always been the hallmark of the Kurien people, but this sorely tested their loyalty.

While Kur once again struggled to rebuild, alien eyes watched and recorded these developments with great interest.

The Shadow Approaches

++Image from an Imperial waystation. Contact with the station was soon lost after the image was sent.++

In 999.M41, astropathic messages began to trickle in which that sank the hearts of Kurien leadership: Tyranid ships had been located within the sector and reports indicated that the main fleet was headed toward Kur. Their estimated arrival would be in months; a year at the most.

While these reports were kept secret from the general populace, word was somehow leaked. Posters featuring vivid images of Tyranid life forms, pamphlets detailing their terrifying methods of attack and untraceable vox messages that warned of impending doom began to circulate. Attempting to stop the spread of information, anyone in possession of such material was either killed or incarcerated, but this did little good. Mass panic began, as large groups of civilians demanded that their leaders reinforce their particular cities at the expense of others. Realizing that his people were at the cusp of civil war, Governor Utanu conducted a planet-wide vox transmission that attempted to reassure the people that their leaders had everything under control. While this did succeed in stopping large scale rebellion, noisier factions had to be put down swiftly by PDF forces. This did not, however, stop the feelings of dissent that had developed among the people. Quieter, more subtle conspirators began executing their plans.

The situation continued to worsen as reports came in of several brutal slayings and disappearances that had plagued the populace in the recent months. Investigators and PDF patrols struggled to find who was responsible, yet their searches revealed nothing. This created a growing tension among even those in the government who felt that their world was slipping out of their hands.

Grossly unprepared to defeat a full swarm of Tyranid invaders, the planet called out to the void for any assistance. Weeks passed with no response, till an unexpected transmission was received. Kur’s cry for help was heard, not by Imperial authorities, but by the listening stations of the Tau Sept of Ksi’m’yen.

Quote:
Addendum: The Ksi'm'yen Sept:

Image
Ksi'm'yen is young, having only recently been established in the Tau’s 3rd Sphere expansion as early as 998.M41. Yet despite their youth, its people have already proven themselves to excel in the art of stealth and subterfuge. Meticulous planning and subtlety have become their standard approach to warfare, giving Tau of the Sept a reputation for being schemers and risk takers. Their location has them as the closest Tau stronghold near Kur and the local Shas'ar'tol felt that rapidly capitalizing on the ground they had only recently gained would allow them to resist any counter attacks the Imperium would send against them. Worlds like Kur proved perfect for this purpose as it provided an ideal staging ground for the local Kor'vattra to maintain a reserve fleet that could then outflank any attackers on the Septs borders.

Por’El Ksi'm'yen Va’Taal, a fiery young Water caste diplomat, had carefully devised a strategy to take Kur with little bloodshed. Through dozens of loyal human agents infiltrated among the population, she had months ago orchestrated a campaign to create a sense of panic and mistrust of Imperial authorities among the Kurien people. Slowly, pro-Tau propaganda was distributed to population centers, medical aid was given to the poor and cruel lawmen were killed or disappeared. Each time, the Tau were lauded as saviors who cared for the needs of the common man. Yet the Tau kept their involvement hidden and those who sided with them chose to keep their views secret, especially after the brutal put down of the protestors, many weeks ago.

Back in the Governors headquarters, panic began to grow. With no Imperial response to their calls for aid, many felt that the Imperium had abandoned them. To make matters worse, Governor Utanu fell gravely ill and granted temporary authority to his daughter Talha; a strong, capable woman who had much experience in running planetary affairs. Her election was, of course, not popular among those who felt a woman was incapable of leading the people and led to a great deal of arguing among the Governors staff. It was during this time of distress that Por’El Va’Taal made direct contact with the local government.

Quote:
“We have seen your plight and the way your Imperium has left you. They seek to take from you, but we only seek to provide. Join with us and we will provide you with protection, supplies and purpose beyond what your oppressors are offering. Do not fool yourselves, the Tyranid are coming. Do not throw your lives away; we can help.”

- Por’El Ksi'm'yen Va’Taal, in communication with the Kurien leadership.

As can be expected, initial reaction from the Kurien leaders to the Tau delegation was a firm ‘no.’ Lady Talha, for her part, questioned the true motives of the Tau, fearing that her people would be letting their guard down only to be betrayed. Yet as time passed and the looming threat of the Tyranid advance grew ever closer many of the Imperials began to lose their nerve. Soon, the Tau offer of protection became too tempting to pass up, and a dialog was started.

While arguments and debates raged on in the Governors chambers, Por’El Va’Taal put her next plan into action. Tau spies, having spent weeks giving stirring pro-Tau speeches, began the rebellion in earnest. Large crowds demanded that their leaders accept the offer of the Tau and thus spare their people from the suffering that was awaiting them. Calling themselves “The Voice of Reason,” this Tau supported rebellion attacked and overtook a local PDF garrison, fortifying the defenses and declaring it the safe haven for any who would welcome the Tau.

Large forces of PDF troops assembled to destroy the rebels, but were stopped by the genuinely unanticipated attack of a massive Genestealer swarm, whose nest had been disturbed by an ordinance misfire. Actually seeing Tyranid already on their world worked wonders in convincing some of the more stubborn PDF leaders of their desperate situation. Many commanders swore themselves to service of the Tau Empire, if it meant that their families would be safe.

With local support for the Tau growing, Imperial authorities felt that they had no choice but to accept the Tau's offer and turn themselves over as vassals to the Tau. Yet as they met with the Tau delegation, to confirm terms of their allegiance, a truly unexpected development changed everything.

-The Council Chamber of Governor Utanu, 9722999.M41. Approximately twenty four weeks until Tyranid invasion.-

"As you can see, our proposal is to relocate your population centers to these three areas. There they will be the most easily defended.” The large holographic image showed a swiftly rotating view of the planet, with the Tau’s defense zones highlighted in red. The Por’s four-fingered hand seemed able to move and rotate the glowing, blue image with varying twitches and swipes. Talha could not help but feel unnerved at the technology that these xenos brought with them.

The holo image froze in place and the Por turned to address the council directly. “This will, however, require the cooperation of your entire staff. We can provide the air assets to move the people and supplies, but we must be allowed total operational control.”

Some commotion had been created by that last statement. Some council members shifted in their seats, while others exchanged hushed, but heated remarks, as the dread of a Tau takeover was starting to become clearer.

The Por seemed to sense this: “Your government will have a share in the activity, of course. But with all due respect, my people are most familiar with the systems required for this operation and it would serve the greater good to have us take the lead.”

The xeno radiated confidence. Even as she wore a look of genuine interest and concern, she could not hide an underlying sense of pride. It was clear that this Tau felt they had won.

The Water Caste envoy turned directly to Talha, “I trust this will not be a problem?” She said with a slight smile tugging at the corner of her mouth.

Talha clenched her jaw. This xeno was toying with them. The Tau could have landed their military units right now, but instead they made this illusion of peace and cooperation; these creatures were experts.

In the days that proceeded this current discussion, Talha had matched wits with this Va’Taal several times; each attempting to out negotiate each other in a dazzling verbal fencing match. Never before had Talha met someone who could match her wits. She began wondering if Va’Taal had been chosen specifically to interact with humans.

The Por’s face seemed, in comparison to the other Tau, to be the most human in appearance. Of course, the blue skin and lack of a nose made all the difference, but Talha could not help but notice the similarities in the alien’s body language, facial expressions and tone of voice. It all seemed too familiar. Even the xenos accent was distinctly Kurien! It was enough that if she closed her eyes, Talha could have sworn that it was a local woman speaking.

As all eyes in the council room turned to Talha, she began to keenly feel the weight of the world on her shoulders. She had a choice: Accept the Tau’s offer and hopefully prevent the loss of their planet from the Tyranid, or refuse and face the inevitable attack from the Tau. The latter option seemed pointless as any victory against the xenos they could achive would leave them even more unprepared for when the Tyranid arrived to devour them. But if they did side with the Tau, what would happen once the Imperium discovered their treachery? Would she dishonor her father and all of her ancestors who ruled before him? Neither option was desirable.

All her life, Talha had been around politicians. She knew the way they thought, the way they schemed, the way they double-spoke their way into people’s hearts. After becoming an adult, she struggled for twenty years to get to where she was today and she achieved it, not because of her good looks, but because of her sharp intelligence and a stern desire to never accept defeat.

Now here stood this xeno, this politician. She would not let this one beat her either.

Standing to face the Tau, she began to speak. “Por’El, my people have…” Talha trailed off, the sight that suddenly appeared before her eyes stole the words from her throat.

The air in the center of the room began to move and a sudden point of light appeared. Quickly it expanded into a white light that grew brighter and brighter till all in attendance had to turn away. The smell of ozone and a wave of heat washed over the room. Reaching a blinding peak, the light flashed and suddenly faded. In its place, a massive, hulking shape appeared.

All eyes shifted back toward the center of the room. Talha had to blink several times as she struggled to make the spots go away. And as her vision cleared, she began to make out what was before her.

"Oh throne.." Talha whispered as she noticed the distinct shape of a man begin to rise to its feet. No, this was no man. She had heard about them; every citizen of the Imperium had. This was a living legend, a god amongst men. Its armor was a dark, muddied yellow with sections of dark green. On its left shoulder, a black stripe was displayed. It was emblazoned with what appeared to be a star and a crescent shape beneath it. In its right hand, a large, boxy weapon was held. It was clear that this being was designed to bring one thing: death.

Everyone in the room was silent; shocked at the sight they beheld. The Tau diplomat had been pulled behind her bodyguard and the four warriors pointed their long rifles at the figure. For a few moments, the tension in the air was thick. Talha noticed that she had been holding her breath the whole time.

It rose with seemingly little effort; its mass apparently no hindrance to its movement. Then, a deep, smooth voice came from the figure: “Greetings, honored council of Kur.”

Everyone in the room jumped at the unexpected sound. Yet Talha noticed that the Tau diplomat seemed, not scared, but…irritated. Again, the hulking warrior spoke: “I am Şefik Bahadır, Veteran Scholar of the 1st Orta. I represent my lord and master, NIthik Taksheel, Grand Aghasi of the Shadow Guardians.”

The warrior paused and surveyed those before him; his massive, helmeted head masking any expression and making him appear more alien than the ones that were in the room. Everyone sat transfixed. Some of his titles and words were foreign, but it was clear that he was a representative of an Astartes Chapter. Had the Emperor sent him to punish the Kurien people for their involvement with these xenos? Talha began to shake.

“My master gives me this message: ‘Do not lose faith. The Emperor has heard your pleas and He has responded. We are coming to save you, honored people of Kur.”

At once, all eyes turned toward Talha. They were waiting for her response. Would she continue to side with the Tau or would she put faith in this Astartes words? Would this warrior bring death to her and her people or salvation?

She took a deep breath, and with the fate of her people hanging in the balance, she began to speak.

Okay, so with that setup, we can begin to get into the armies properly! The Ksi'm'yen Sept might be represented by a few models, but we’ll see. Anyway, let’s talk a little about Tyranid, okay?

Paint schemes are one of the biggest things I waffle on. If I can’t find a paint scheme I can 1) really like and 2) paint easily, I just end up staring at the models. So now I am trying to find a paint scheme for my Tyranid that really gets me. First off, let’s look at my old scheme:

Image
Image
Image

So while I like the scheme I had, it is really dull and I feel like I can do a lot better now. I do, however, like the look of a shocking accent color (I especially like painting the lower jaw something bright). Now, I have a dark army (grey ARC-16s) and a dirty yellow army (Shadow Guardians) and now I want something that stands out, but also doesn’t look like a cartoon. So there were two schemes that caught my eye:

1.)
Image
Image

This scheme was on the GW website not to long ago. This was painted by a 12yr old! You can read how he painted it on the site, but it seems fairly straight forward.

2.)
Image
This was an adaptation of an alternate Behemoth scheme from the 3rd & 4th Edition codex. It is done by Scab and his log is here. Annoyingly, he refuses to post his techniques because he feels it would help people “cheat” their way to a great painting style that he took long to achieve. That is retarded, but not the point.

Anyway, here is the original scheme:
Image

I quite like the look! I feel like it allows me both a dark and bright colored army that would be fun to paint! What do you guys think?

Oh and I am gonna try to get some banners made for my updates like I had in my ARC-16 log. I will have one for each of the races and one for stories. If anyone wants to volunteer their photoshop abilities, let me know! :D

I really like the fluff. You've set the stage beautifully. Kur's populace is very well-informed, if they know what the tyranid are. My impression was that they were secret from most levels of society but the highest?

As for the colour schemes... I'm not really into the same kind of scheme that I think you're looking for, with the super-bright pop colour. I like the last scheme the least, and the middle one the best. Then again, I feel like the middle scheme is better-painted than the others, which is hard to ignore. You could do something like PidGinRat's tyranids, with an pop colour on the shells of the second scheme?

Thanks Didi!

I was hoping to imply in the background that the leaked info on the Tyranid invasion was more than just, "the Tyranid are coming!" I intended for it to mean that the leaked info would include what the Tyranid are and what they are capable of. Of course, being a frontier world, Kur has likely had its share of travelers and merchants visit who can spread rumours and some terrifying information on the galaxy. Unlike some worlds who are only dimly aware of the universe, a frontier world would have some more exposure to the threats faced by the Imperium. Hmm....maybe I need to change the wording a bit. :)

EDIT: Adding things to the part where the Tyranid info is leaked.

As for the color scheme, I know what you mean. I really do like that middle color scheme as well. I think I am just attached to the idea of a bright color on the face. Kind of like how some poisonous animals are brightly colored. Hmm... maybe a combination of the two is in order.

I really like the dark blue and tan themed nids. Blue is typically easier to shade and highlight than other colors.

The ones done by Scab are meh, they are well painted but the color do nothing for me. Painting asside he has a total jerk attitude. I don't see how somebody can think that their painting tech is so super secret and original that nobody can duplicate it. Even the greatest painters needed advice and picked up pointers from time to time, so he's a tool.

I have an exact polar opposite of his views i think it's best when people who paint well share with others as it improves the hobby as a whole, if you have a bunch of awesome looking models do you really want to see on the table next to poorly painted stuff or would you rather they be playing in a game where both armies look good? Me I'd prefer everyone stuf flook as good as posisble

Anyways I'll be watching for updates on this and your nids have been neglected for far too long

Great fluff update, once again you managed to get everyone's attention hu :)
At first I liked the tan one more, but the more I look at the red one, the more I think the tan is just so. .. ordinary. I mean, tan is nice and safe, but I would go with a more special scheme. Also, tan is a mix of grey and brownish yellow :P
But you have to go with whatever you like best yourself ofcourse.

Another solid thread Wolf :)

I'm liking the first Tyrannic scheme, suitably dark and alien. Also I can see production line painting far easier than the second scheme.

Everyone has covered all the other comments I could make about your project ;)

Yeah, I was really pissed off when I read his posts. This hobby is all about sharing ideas and being creative. For someone to hold that back just flies in the face of everything we have all worked to establish. Okay, enough ranting. :D I agree that the pink head scheme might be a little much. I think that the blueish bone scheme is probably the winner. The only thing is, I thought I had Hawk Turquoise, but I don't. So I would need to find a paint that is similar to it. A regular blue might be a little too bright. Hmmm, I have a pot of Scaly Green, but I don't think GW makes that anymore... :?

Kern:
Glad you like where things are going! I have a basic story outline in my head, but I'm sure it will continue to evolve over time. As for the potential dullness of the bone color, I know what you mean. But I think adding a bright accent color would change it up nicely.

Tael:
I always aim to please! :) I know once I paint a few test figs, I will get a good idea of the scheme. Now I gotta figure out what color to use instead of Hawk Turquoise. I have all the GW shades of blue! Maybe I should just break down and buy some HT.

Thoughts?

Mix two parts Enchanted Blue with 1 part Sunburst Yellow and 1 part Skull White. Try it out and see what you think.

How about combine both schemes and take the best parts from each?

I think it'd be pretty cool to see the deep blue bodies and tan plates, with turqoise highlighting. Then take a page from the pink heads but instead do blue heads? Some of the turquoise going to an ice blue highlighting would be really bold and probably fit in nicely with the overall blue pattern.

Sightings

After their dramatic entry into Kurien affairs, the Shadow Guardians quickly moved to consolidate their position. The news that Astartes had appeared on the planet was the cause of significant panic, with many who were once sympathetic to the Tau making very loud and very public expressions of hatred for the xeno and loyalty to the Imperium. The Shadow Guardians had indeed expected this development and used this fear to their advantage.

Şefik Bahadır served as his Chapters spokesman. It was he who teleported into the Governors palace and quickly brought the fear of the Emperor to those who doubted. Unexpectedly, he allowed the Tau emissary to leave peacefully, informing her that any further attempt to interfere with Kurs affairs would constitute them an active threat to the planet that was now under their protection. Ever wary of losing her influence, Por’El Va’Taal chose to leave the proceedings peacefully, stating that her people were just as interested in the planets future and would not see it swallowed by the Tyranid menace.

With the people now aware of the Shadow Guardians protection, Şefik met with Interim Governess Talha to instruct her on what would happen next. He informed her and her cabinet that the Chapter had taken the initiative to scout out and identify sources of Tyranid infestation. Kill teams were to be assembled and dispatched immediately in order to destroy these threats and ensure the peoples safety from the local Tyranid menace. He assured them that support would be waiting for them.

This would indeed prove unnervingly true as local recon teams found their patrols suddenly backed up by Space Marine Scouts who appeared, seemingly out of nowhere. It was postulated that the Shadow Guardians must have been on this planet for some time, as no ships had yet been detected in orbit, yet more and more Scouts began appearing in different battle zones. When questioned on the matter, they would remain aloof and avoid the topic. This further cemented the public view that the Shadow Guardians were watching them at all times.

It is important to note that, with the exception of Şefik Bahadır, all the Shadow Guardian forces that had been deployed were Scout forces; no power armor equipped units were ever seen in these initial phases. This would somewhat change once larger battles against dug in Tyranid nests were fought. During those brutal engagements, Terminator equipped Marines would teleport right into battle without any warning. These skilled warriors always were deployed alone and their appearance usually brought several more Scouts who seemed concealed in the field until that time.

Together with the local PDF, the combined force located and destroyed several Genestealer nests. The Shadow Guardians made excellent use of ambush and surprise attacks, often using the human troopers as bait for the swarms. These tactics initially raised the ire of several local commanders, but even these soon saw the strategic effectiveness of these tactics and submitted to the Guardians’ battle plans.

++This pict-cap displays a Scout conferring with his commander. Of interesting note is the non-Codex approved helmets worn by the Scouts. The deployed Shadow Guardians were under strict orders by their master not to remove their helms at any time. The savage potential of the Tyranid threat could mean the death of several Marines in battle and their commander knew what a blow to trooper morale a dead, glassy-eyed Marine body would be. The helms added a sense of mystery and detachment the Chapter desired and did much to give them a psychological edge. ++

Yet despite these initial strikes, Tyranid xenoforms began to be spotted with increasing regularity, all over the planet. Some of these creatures were clearly identified as Genestealers, while others were more elusive to spot, but no less deadly. It quickly became clear that the current infestation of the planet was more severe than was previously thought.

Still, with Tyranid threats being systematically destroyed, the Shadow Guardians turned their attention to an even greater threat: the so called ‘Voice of Reason’ and their Tau masters. Yet if the Marines thought the Tau threat would be easily removed, they had grossly underestimated the strength of the Tau presence on Kur.

Battlefield Pict-caps:

Image
++Scout Squad Hasan, responsible for the destruction of the Genestealer nest that had been hibernating in an unused service tunnel, just below the Governors palace. This discovery caused an understandable amount of panic and squad Hasan was tasked with the systematic sweeping of the palace grounds. Although no other infestations were discovered, only Governess Talha was willing to return to the palace.++ (Okay, so I have begun adding some weathering to my Scouts. I started using some weathering powder on the cloth and I like the way it dirtied them up. It’s hard to see in the photo, but they are dirtier! :) I still have a ways to go, but it’s a start!)

++Pictured here are two beasts faced only in major engagements. Trygons, who were often seen leading retaliatory attacks against nesting areas, were usually followed by a smaller, yet equally ferocious beast called a Shoveler. Reports indicate that the initial kill team that encountered these two beasts barely escaped with their lives, owing their rescue to several groups of “giant machines” who pummeled the creatures from afar and “xeno riders” who swiftly closed in to deliver the killing blow. Upon their return, the squads survivors were intercepted by Shadow Guardian agents for debriefing.++

Quote:
Addendum: “Shovelers”

As Tyranid attacks began to rise, the Shadow Guardians took it upon themselves to locate and seal any tunnel entrances made by the beasts. Shovelers, as they were known by the local PDF troops, were large Mawloc variants that dug and maintained these tunnels. The earned their name for their large, shovel like mouths they would use tp scoop up dirt, combine it with internal fluids and then excrete it along the tunnels they dug. Once allowed to harden, these tunnels were strong and capable of withstanding great pressure. While not as physically powerful as the Trygon, these creatures responded with an almost suicidal fury when their tunnels were threatened. This led to many deaths among the Shadow Guardian troops, but once their pattern of attack was studied, these creatures began to be killed quite routinely.

Yet what was most troubling about these creatures was the fact that the tunnels they created bore a striking resemblance to the tunnels found all around Kur. Upon analyzing the hard, glazed surfaces created by the Shovelers excretions, it was determined that the tunnels dug by these xenoforms were indeed the same as the ancient ones used by the Kurien people for centuries.

It was always assumed that the tunnels were created by the planets first inhabitants. But it now appeared that while this was indeed true, the planets original inhabitants were not human.

Okay, enough of that. So what do ya'll think about my little Trygon/Mawloc? I figure I could use it as both, since there is little difference other than antennae and the big ol' mouth. Speaking of which, what do you guys think of the little mandibles on the side? I like 'em! Them make him look really gribbly and I can just see them shoveling dirt into the big open mouth. Now, I feel like something else might be needed to the head. What do you guys think about these possible additions?

Standard horn here.

I have always wanted to use this weird little bit, but was never sure how to include it. Mounting it on the head of a tunneling beasts made me think of the weird noses that moles have, so maybe this would fit?

I talked about Genestealers, didn't I? Well here is the first squad all completed. Except for paint of course!
Image

Now, I wanted to use the Space Hulk stealers, but I found that the weird leg positioning made it hard to fit on a base. So I needed to chop off some feet to make them look a bit more natural. I also had to cut the hand off of one stealer and replace it with a regular open hand, since he was holding a termie helmet in a weird, Hamlet-like pose.
Image
Now it looks like the Genestealers are wearing blue pajamas!

Lastly, let's take a look at the Broodlord. I decided to cut him off his big skull mound since I don't like it. I attached him to an invasion base, which I think works. Maybe I should put more around him though...
Image

I also added a broken Tau pulse rifle in his other hand instead of the skull. This is for two reasons. 1, he now has wargear from both my other armies and 2, it raises a good question as to how the Broodlord could have gotten a hold of a Tau weapon? :crafty:

On to the topic of color schemes. Eiglepulper, I tried your recipe and it was very similar! But I got lazy with mixing and decided to bite the bullet and buy some Hawk Turquoise. Thanks though!

Paulson, I will take your advice with the color scheme and change the color up in some places. Look forward to seeing some test Gaunts in the next update!

Oh and I got myself some liquid greenstuff! I LOVE it! I hope to write a nice review later.

Aha, changed the kneecap sign, I'm honored
I really like how the weathered scouts are turning out. I think the dark green and yellow come together just perfect, and the swords really add to the background of the cadre!
On the tyranid part, I think the top head part looks really weerd, but then again, tyranids are weerd creatures, so it actually fits pretty ok.
Interested to see the test scheme!

I understand the sentimental attachment to the gribbly-horn, but it doesn't appeal to me. I just feel like it would get in the way of his digging. Perhaps if you could shorten it? Or integrate it with his head-shell more? I'm just not sure....

I'm quite interested in both horn variations. And as Didi is expressing some doubt, I'm inclined to agree, but perhaps reverse the position. If the sold purpose of this xenoform is to burrow, why not angle the horns towards the front of the maw, as if they are designed to allow it to cut through the earth more efficiently??

I like everything you've done about the shoveler, and I think if you want to add more, that may be the way to go. Though you could always just look at movies like Starship Troopers or even Tremors for details. Like would it pay to perhaps add a small scoop/frill towards the rear of the head to give the impression that when burrowing, the head and torso almost overlap, creating a more stream lined shape?

Either way, AMAZING background work for this conflict and I like what you've done with the Genestealers. Perhaps some skulls or SM helmets would be fitting around such a menacing xeno.

Another great update Wolf! :D

I really like how that "Shoveller" is turning out too, and I agree with the above comments about the horn.

And the plot thickens, the tyranids seem to have been there for quite some time, almost kinda scary! I really do like how you said the tunnels used by the people actually were tyranid tunnels in the first place. Makes me wonder how long they have been there.
