Hello Fellow Blues,

I am trying to locate the material on the picture because I am basing my models as if they are assaulting an imperial ship or a space hulk. I have found a diamond plate that is going to do well but I really need a better grating type base. If you know what that is or have any suggestions for that type of base I would be uber appreciative.

Thank you in advance,
Oni.

Its probably plasticard. You can find textured/patterned plasticard at hobby shops, especially places that cater to model train/plane/car enthusiasts. Evergreen scale models makes the variety that I've used most often.

Thank you for your response Dizy.

Yes the Evergreen and the Plastruct are the ones I know of, but neither has that in their product list. That is unless it was discontinued or I am just hitting a blind spot. Most of the plasticard stuff I have found does not have holes or perforations. Its all raised detail ones that I have come across. I am really hoping to find the stuff on that model it would make my project so much easier. I wanted to do something like this with my army for a long time.

Thanks again for the reply.

Not quite the same thing but you could use plastic needlepoint canvas.

Excellent suggestion Vior'la Mont'yon

That is a good material. I had picked some of that up a week or so ago. It takes paint alright but you do have to use super glue to keep it down. It's made out of something that plastic glue doesn't affect. It is a pretty nice alternative and was going to be my main material until I saw that picture and noticed how awesome it looked. I am hoping to get all the materials and everything together and make a easy list just in case I am not the only guy wracking his brain trying to get everything perfect for a shipboard army.

Thanks for the suggestion.

It's a little difficult to see in the small picture, but I believe that is actually real metal grating (having seen it used before for certain projects), but I can't recall the source at the moment. I know various people have used cheap splatter guards and perhaps even very lightweight mosquito meshing, so they could be worth a look...

From what I see this is a wire grid stuck on the base.

It is used for making screens for windows ( sorry, I am not sure if screen is the correct term, i.e. to avoid flying insects in the house from an open window).

Most probably hardware store will have a grid like this.

I think what you are looking for is high quality screen door screen. The cheap stuff is simply woven and would fall apart if trimmed to shape before gluing down to a base. The expensive stuff is coated in a vinyl and could be cut easily to whatever shape you want. I just had to redo my screen door with this super heavy duty pet proof stuff.

That is a great looking screen and thanks to everyone for the input it's definitely been a help. I am really gonna have to take a look through my hardware store to find one with the longer rectangle length. I owe you guys.

Thanks again,

p.s.
If you have anymore ideas on this stuff please feel free to add to this I want to get this right.

Instead of gluing you could use greenstuff, especially when attaching the figure to the base. Flywire mesh screen will have a definite "height" to it when used on a base, much more than the embroidery material.

A great souce of flat mesh can be found inside most old tube TVs/screens. There's a big, flat strip of mesh around the edge of the screen. Just be careful, it's sharp. You should be able to find a big old TV for next to nothing in junk stores, council tips, in your relative's garage, etc etc.
