Thankyou very much for your feedback. :) I am very happy with how the tank has come out.

I agree with you on the shas'ui's yellow eyes, now that I look at him again - he looks a little ill! I finished my Ethereal's eyes in white with a black slit, and that looks much better I think. See what you think - pics of the finished ethereal this week, as soon as I have done his base.

Funnily enough I picked up a pot of matte varnish this weekend! I intend to see what kind of effect I can get with some gloss varnish for lenses and matte for everything else.

Well, as of last night my Ethereal has been finished bar a few touch-ups and a good spray with matte varnish.

Aun'el Fi'rios Ky'lynu

I have found that the paint-on matte varnish, while tough, doesn't seem to be all that... well, matte. I have an old tin of satin spray - maybe a settling mist of varnish will give the desired effect. At the moment he looks like he's wearing an awful lot of leather! And my gem work on his staff is poor - it looks like a pea!

This is my first time with snow flock too. I am not sure about it; I think I prefer the old sodium bicarbonate snow on my older models - it'd certainly tidier, and has the advantage of being a paste you can spread and manipulate. Will play with both types, and a combination to see what kind of effects I can get.

Does anyone have any thoughts on a little plant to put by the rocks? I was thinking of some green and brown cotton thread, one end untwisted, dipped in a bit of PVA (for rigidity) and then glued with a blob of superglue at the 'stalk' end. I am unsure if this will work too well, though.

The little campaign we are planning looks like it will go ahead. I will start a little thread about it once the map is finalised, the armies are painted, and the beers have been broken out. There is some impressive fiction and other colourful fluff on this site, might be fun to give it a go myself.

Considering how few games I've actually played in the last year and a half, this should be a baptism of fire for fledgling Fi'rios Cadre sent to Koriolis. The Imperial Guard army of my housemate scares me a bit, but that's only cos it's his, and he's far better at all this than I am! And our Necron player, ofc, because I have had a look through the codex, and they can get some tough things for 750pts.

(I have a limited edition Innes & Gunn saved for my first win! My favourite beer, highly recommended, though I am unsure how easy it is to get hold of outside the UK. Honestly, I could wax lyrical about this sweet nectar from bonnie Scotland!)

Lunch break over, back to the grind of a CAD office.

Comments & criticism would be amazing, especially the latter!

Over a week since my last post. Time for an update!

I got joint 2nd place in the local store's monthly painting competition, joint with my housemates Arjac Rockfist! The dawn duel with the nerf guns remains unneeded, and honour satisfied. Actually really proud, he is a more accomplished painter, though mine took me ~5 hours or so longer than his. I thought it was a neater model too - here he is:

Image
Arjac Rockfist - Not mine!

The winner was a predator tank. The painting wasn't fantastic, but there was some impressive weathering which popped it somewhat. I should have got a picture.

We win nothing but kudos for all this, but hey, it's its own reward in my opinion. Next months project is a Space Marine Librarian. I am thinking Fire Hawks chapter colours!

Felt a bit ill this weekend, so aside from watching some DVDs (Kung Fu Panda still makes me laugh like the man-child I am) and ofc the fantastic F1 season finale (108 days and counting 'til the new season starts - honestly, winter to me is the F1 off-season) I built some firewarriors, a second Devilfish/Skyray/Hammerhead, and cracked on with my XV81 commander. I also finally decided on a colour scheme for my Crisis Teams, which I am happy with;

ImageImageImageImage
Shas'vre Fi'rios Eio'nen

I am afraid that the painting is a bit scruffy at the moment. I am a bit of an instant-gratification kind of painter. I get impatient to add details and accents, and neglect the necessary base coats sometimes. This has been painted up from an old grey undercoat, so the white has taken a lot of effort, and I got bored. The markings need neatening up, and some touch-ups on the glow effect (which took a lot of playing to get right). He is holding my version of a Cyclic Ion Blaster. The design is based on something I have seen on this site somewhere - if anyone speaks up to claim credit I will display their link proudly.

I was going to post some WIPs of my commander, but he is a pile of pieces right now. I didn't like the head too much, so I have modified a kitbash head I have seen a few times on ATT. I will try to get his base finished and some WIP shots of him in the next couple of days.

The last picture is my Piranha. I added the camouflage scheme, and a bit of soot behind the engines. Much work to do, however!
ImageImage
Piranha

This week I will try to finish my commander, and get the first Firewarrior squad complete. I hope I can get a family photo of my joint Fi'rios / Bork'an campaign army soon.

Commander Update!

ImageImage

ImageImage
So-far-unnamed Commander

The base is not finished yet - I have snow and grass to add. His position on the base will likely change too. He had been blu-taked to the base for the photo-shoot, and slowly fell over as I was taking pictures!

I may do a blue gem effect on the Tau symbol on his shoulders since there is a lot of unbroken white around there. Still, I am happy with how he's turned out, and I'm getting better at the glow effect. It's a lot more subtle on this model than the last XV8. My custom bodged AFP looks alright too, imo.

I was unsure about the gold semi-circle panels with this scheme, but I decided to go ahead with it to tie the new suits in with those in my old colour scheme. The positions of the markings etc is also the same. I am hoping this will be enough to stop them looking to incongruous.

Now, if only I could drum up some enthusiasm for painting my firewarrior teams....

C&C always welcome,

ttfn, ~K

I finally got around to finishing my commander's base, and pinning him to it. I am rather proud of it, honestly. I used the 'bicarbonate paste' style snow for the drifts and packed snow, and the snow flock for frost and fresh powder.

Here is a little family portrait of my Commander, Ethereal and bodyguard.
Please forgive the slightly poor shot; I have lent my camera out so am relying on my phone camera (a HTC One S for those interested).

Piranha done (bar the base). I do not need this for our campaign, but I love the model so couldn't resist it.
ImageImage

The slog that is my Firewarrior team continues. I am finding them rather... frustrating. There are so many flaws on them, and I am having trouble being neat when I am batch painting. I think for the second team I will paint one a night, and take my time over each one, treat each as a separate character. Does anyone have any tips on how to be a little neater with my painting? Am I just too impatient?

As a break from trying to tidy up white armour panels I painted another BFG cruiser. Here is a picture of the houses two opposing fleets. I am winning at the moment I think!

Image

Additional: I have just noticed that the Piranha pilot and co-pilots antennae are missing! I have no idea when that happened. Will have to hunt the old sprue, or I'll have to make some. That will annoy me.

...or not give them any...

I leave them off of all my firewarriors, but you could easily say that warriors mounted in vehicles are using the vehicles' superior communication systems and thus don't require personal comms

That's a good enough justification for me! I do like the aesthetic of the antennae, but if i can't find them then they'll have to manage without I guess.

Thanks Da Skyman :)

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and a new year to remember!

Resolutions are still going well; I am writing more, and started drawing again for the first time in years. Just need to do my first gym visit of the year now...

I have also been cracking on with a bunch of models. 2nd Firewarrior team started (1st is nearly finished), 2nd tank started, and I have improved my commander and even sprayed a Remora drone I have had sat on my desk for the best part of 6 months. I hope to have a family shot of my fully painted campaign army up in the coming week, but expect some work in progress shots in the meantime.

I am away at the weekend at my splendid lady's, but in case I get some free time I will take my Space Marine Librarian with me to paint. It is the only Space Marine I own. I fell in love with the Fire Hawks chapter colour scheme in the Badab War book. It should be a nice change from the white and green!

Work has been extremely quiet this week (it always is in January), so I spent a few hours tinkering in CAD. I have never been completely enamoured of either GW's or Forgeworld's take on the Tau star ships, so I had a quick go at designing one myself. Fluff aside (gravitational based drive meaning the ships tend toward being short and wide) I always preferred the Imperial Navy style of ship; long, thin with an engine stuck on the back, and capable of huge broadsides.

Here is the result of my messing about. Any thoughts? It seems to be missing something.

Image

Anyway, enough waffling. Here's to 2013!

I've always pictured tau ships as having a hammerhead on the front, they tend to mount weapons forward facing rather then for broadsides and that seems to make sense to me. A wide front, dropping down to a thinner, but taller, middle section, and then widening out again, though not nearly as far, in the rear. Similar to how the devilfish looks from above, but wider in the front. I also picture something of a ring around the mid section, like the life support section of a 'modern' space station (the spinning ring thingy).

Then again, I'm odd, but I like the ship, looks like a giant flying railgun... which very well might be what it is XD

Borrowing some more aesthetics from the vehicles might make it shout "Tau" a bit more. If I get chance I'll have a go at adding a hammerhead bow tomorrow.

As for the centrifugal gravity ring, that tickles my space travel sci-fact side! Like that idea a lot!

Maybe it's a large ship sized railgun drone, perhaps carried as an escort. Nova cannon rules, maybe? Perhaps I'm being silly! :-P

Koriolis Map

Well, our campaign continues apace! After a successful initial two months (turns!) my noble tau have had a couple of rough games against an Ork enclave and a rather stubborn warboss. As a result of a pasting by the warboss own boyz and a choice selection of mechanical monstrosities from his favourite mekboy, my force has been given Hatred(Orks) by the GM. Revenge shall be mine!

As an offering to the dice gods I have also got around to finishing some firewarriors, bar the basing. All in all, I am very chuffed with them. Ooh look, pictures!
ImageImage
Shas'ui Oi'myr and squad

It is now Month 4 on Koriolis. It is time for the first force escaltion, so I am in the process of building the forces I need to bring my force up to 1000pts.

I am adding another Devilfish (which is currently in pieces, but the undercoat and black lining is done, along with the camo base colour.

Image

To accompany this I will add some pathfinders. I love pathfinders as a concept, as a force multiplyer I think they can bring quite a lot to my army. While I do own some already, they are old metal ones, and they are repaints of ebay acquired repaint. Their previous owner dipped them in gloss or something equally horrific so they won't stand another respray without becoming morph. I tried to pick up some finecast ones, but my local GW store in Hull seems to be stocking few Tau models at the moment, so I will order from an online retailer.

I did however pick up a razorback for my 'secret' project, which allowed me to to do some simple conversion work to my other new unit for my 1000pt army - a Broadside suit! It is not an original conversion, so credit to Tael for the leg armour and to Darkwater for the leg shape conversion. I hope the execution is worthy of the original work!

ImageImage
Unnamed XV88 Shas'vre minus railguns - modified from an old one and in need of undercoating

Shas'el Ol'erra has also had a promotion, and some additions to his paint job. The addition of the orange shoulder let me play with some shading; the under panel has some blood red added to the blazing orange tone I used elsewhere to give an illusion of top lighting. I like it, but maybe some brown would have worked better in this instance. Still, experimentation is fun.
Image
Shas'O Fi'rios Ol'erra

I was so happy with how the firewarriors looked that I threw these together just for fun

ImageImage

As a break from painting (white) tau, I have the aforementioned Razorback and a finecast SM Librarian to spray and paint up in Fire Hawks chapter colours.
Image
More on these soon, I hope!

Finally, I have also finished my Reaper miniatures gnome druid model, and her pet lynx. Meet Sevik and Ilbryn! I look forward to being able to use them in a game of Pathfinder when I can get my gaming group back together in the spring. In the meantime, she and Ilbryn are my desk mascots!

ImageImageImageImage

That's me up to date. Progress is slow, but satisfying. Any tips or critiques, pointers or ideas regarding my painting, modelling, or conversions or anything else, please do tell me!

I will try to do those modifications to the 3D cruiser too. Maybe one lunchtime this week if work is quiet!

'Til next time,

~K

Re: [WIP] Fi'rios Cadre, Koriolis Contingent (+ Bork'an Cadre)

It was my first game of Month 4 of our campaign tonight, so I had to get my firewarrior squad finished and based before we started! Here they are. I am very happy with them, though I can see where improvements can be made.

Image
Firewarrior Team Oi'myr

I made sure that the squad markings where the same across the unit, and added the dark green accent to their rifles. I may make this a different colour for each squad to make it easier to distinguish them on the field, though I haven't decided yet.

Each warrior has a numbered right shoulder pad, labelled from 01 to 14 (01 to 12 in base 8).

The game was vs a formidable mech ork army. I salvaged a draw after a horrific first couple of turns. Here are some random shots from the game. I will try to write up a battle report, but in the meantime here are my forces in the field against the vile green menace.

ImageImage
Image

Since I posted the last picture of my WIP broadside I have remade him with a different torso. I wasn't happy with the arms on the other model, and the torso was in a much worse condition. Unfortunately the rebuild trauma seemed to take it's toll, and she took 3 turns to kill a single battle wagon, and took the rest of the game to immobilise a trukk. I hope once she is finished she will be much more successful!

Image
Currently unnamed XV88

My commander had a poor game. My army collectively failed to kill a deffdredd with 3 turns of shooting, which meant that it was able (miraculously) make an eleven inch charge through cover to get into CC with Shas'el Ol'erra and Shas'vre Eio'nen.

ImageImage

The Vre was killed in one hit, and the El was run down while fleeing. A rather ignominious end!

Still, it all turned around in the last two turns. I cleared a squad of boyz off one objective, and killed the last line breaking trukk. It would have taken an amazing round of shooting to kill the group of boyz running to the other objective. Unfortunately, while I killed five shoota boyz and a mekboy, the unit held their nerve and made it to the objective. Oh for another turn!

Image

The new Firewarrior team assisted in the killing of five nobs and warboss in one round of shooting, so I am happy with them. They also claimed the objective in turn 7 to claim the draw and killed the aforementioned trukk. :)

Good fun!

Painted my broadside up in one night. It was so late by the time I finished that it was technically early (if you get me), so she needs a bit of a tidy up. Still, she is battle-ready. May the new paint job bring her luck!

ImageImage
Shas'ui Suam'elro

I brought in the dark green accent colour from the fire warriors onto the weapons of the XV88, but I think it's a little much. Maybe I'll just stick with one green panel on the main railgun and add orange to the missile pods to tie it into the XV8's, but as I am working on a design for a kitbash SMS pod I may wait. I am also thinking of returning to Vre'Eio'nan's XV8 and adding a little green to the weapons.

Ok, so my housemates have decided to watch the Superbowl on BBC2, so I have retreated to my PC to edit some pictures, do some writing, and play a game. Basically, to find something less dull to do :P.

I had some time earlier to touch up and recolour Shas'ui Suam'elro. I used a fine liner to draw on a Fi'rios sept symbol on the power core of her suit, which I am very happy with.

Re: [WIP] Fi'rios Cadre, Koriolis Contingent (+ Bork'an Cadre)

I keep looking at Vre'Suam with increasing disatisfaction. While I am still reasonably happy with how she turned out (considering the state of the original metal parts) I am not overly happy with the base, especially compared with a couple I fluked for El'Ol'erra and the Aun. I think I am going to go back to the base this week, and tidy some of little imperfections that a high res picture shows up while I am at it! I should also try some low-lighting to make the white panels pop a little more.

I have been a little unfocussed when it comes to painting in the last few days. I was away at the weekend so I left many half-completed (or indeed half-started!) projects sitting on my hobby desk. When I finally got home last night, I retired up to the loft, put some TV on in the background, and started pottering.

Firewarrior Team 2

I continued work on my second Firewarrior team. I am doing six at a time. I find that I get very sloppy when trying to batch paint a full team, so this is a good compromise. In fact, I still got a little sloppy.

Image

These were primed white, given a basecoat of Model Colour white, then had black wash carefully applied to the panel lines and shadowed areas.

I then cleaned up the white panels with another coat of white. This could have probably been left until after the cloth was done, in all honesty.

Finally I painted in the Catachan Green basecoat for the cloth. This was slightly messier than I'd thought. Next time I am leaving the models partially unassembled to make painting them easier. Please remind me I said this when I get my next FW box!

I will finish their camouflage, then clean up the white again, then it's the fun bit - accents, details and glow!

I added sand to the base early this time, and painted it brown. This was after a discussion with my housemate about basing, and his suggestion was to paint up the sand base, and then add the other elements as I wish later, such as snow, grass, and stones. I look forward to seeing how this goes!

Scale painting test for Lizardman Bloodbowl player

I have an unpainted bloodbowl team made up of a random selection of Saurus Temple Guard and skinks which I have been meaning to tackle for over a year. I attacked this saurus without any real plan, but I am happy with the result on the scales. I think I'll go back to this over the week.

He was primed with Tamiya Grey, basecoated (roughly) with Kantor blue, drybrushed with Enchanted Blue, washed down with black wash, and finally drybrushed with Hawk Turquoise. I suspect that the Enchanted Blue was unnecessary.

ImageImage

Devilfish

Construction/painting of my second Devilfish continues. Slowly.

I painted a few details in the interior, and added a little more light-grey drybrushing to the floor to represent scuffs and trodden in slush and snow.

Image

I did a little prep work on the chin-turret, slicing a burst cannon in half to allow me to drill and magnetise it so that the chassis can be converted to a Skyray or Hammerhead. I do need to finish the camouflage on the turret shell, but I was bored of painting by then, so I stuck the hull together.

I plan on pinning the side doors so that they can open.

This particular Devilfish seems to fit together very well. I did do a test fit before spraying, and did a little preparatory filing, but not very much. Compared with the previous Fish hull, it was a dream! The only point that needs more work is the seam between the rear panel and the roof, as you can see above.

Image

Fire Hawks Librarian

Not much to say about this. Primed it in black, and then added a Kantor Blue base to the areas I planned to make blue and a Gore Red base to those I planned to make orange. I added Enchanted blue to the former and some Blazing Orange to the latter. This made him very gaudy so I washed him down, which has worked OK on the blue, but has made the orange patchy. I got disheartened and left him there. I need to have a think about this one, but any tips are most welcome! I hope to have a go at a little free-hand on him in the latter stages, but I need to get him there first!

Til next time!

Fio Progress Report.

The first six firewarriors have had their painting completed. I am happier with these warriors than with team one. I think I am getting a little neater.
Image

As you can see, the second Devilfish has also had it's painting completed. I haven't completed the magnetising of the chin turret just yet, that is the job for tonight. I attempted to paint in some Fi'rios sept symbols to see if I can could do it. They look effective unless you peer closely at it. I will probably create some custom decals eventually, but for now I am quite satisfied with this. Free-hand work will improve with practice I am sure.

ImageImage
Image

Here is the first and second chassis together, chassis one is the Skyray.

Image

In doing the second chassis I have cemented in my head how many of the details will look, and which parts are blue lenses/electronics and which will be accent colours. I need to return to chassis one and add in sept symbols and make a few minor colour alterations to bring it to the same standard as the new one.

I now need to finish the FW team, and then I can begin working on the next 250pts for the next escalation of the campaign! I am not sure what this will entail as yet; maybe something a little fruity like some vespid, stealth suits or a skyray!
